01 July 2019
It's similar to the offline sharing functionality of Google's Files app. It works over Wi-Fi and shows devices based on proximity.

Anonymous, 01 Jul 2019What about wifi direct?WiFi direct requires that both phones be connected to the same router. It seems that this Fast Share thing doesn't require that.

Devices on the same network apparently can recognize each other without a QR code, but I think it's becoming more and more uncommon to be connected to Wi-Fi when not at home.

Anonymous, 01 Jul 2019What's the advantage of using this over bluetooth? This way, Google is able to see what you're sharing.

So first i switch on bluetooth to detect nearby device. Also for some reason i need to switch on location. And then transfer the data using wifi. Sure its a great example of using current technologies, but it would have been so much easier had it occured just over wifi...

not surprising considering all these fast file sharing apps share it, xender needs location services too, after android marshmellow

Why do you need Bluetooth and location information when you are just transferring files with someone close by?

Anonymous, 01 Jul 2019What's the advantage of using this over bluetooth?Bluetooth is slow, Google Files promises 480Mbps transfer speed (this one probably does too). Bluetooth 3.0+HS (which also uses the Wi-Fi hardware) tops out at 24Mbps.

IpsDisplay, 01 Jul 2019My same question Faster file transfer, easier to share (sometimes bluetooth acting up by not pairing or whatever) and larger file to transfer. iPhone user have AirDrop for a while, and it's hella useful. Now is about time Android have the same thing. Good for Android finally thinking about this feature.
