Anonymous, 13 Feb 2012What a long rant, yet so off base. It would only be fair to... moreHave you also noticed how LG/Samsung and HTC are just releasing recycled form factor after form factor for WP7, not really giving much input into the phones they make for Microsoft's mobile platform. They're focusing thier efforts onto Android where they are free to tweak the power of thier phones and screen res, HTC are just photocopying the HD7/Desire form factor for every WP7 phone they have made with little attempt to make themselves stand out more. Also, why hasn't Samsung created the ultimate windows phone, is it because the software won't allow them to and fails to fulfil thier potential when they are concentrating thier efforts on the S3 to compete with the Iphone 5. WP7 won't allow them or give them that prestige. The restrictions that MS has imposed on the OS and the feeling of alienation by MS and showing a favouritism to Nokia has not done the OS any favours, 2012 is a do or die year for Windows phone. I sure hope that with Apollo that we see incremental changes that will set the OS apart from the competitors. I want three ecosystems, I want Nokia to do something different and succeed with the OS but at the same time, not give the impression of being the chosen one at WP HQ.

It would only be fair to call WP7 a failure once it's been given a proper chance to prove itself. As it is, it seems that Nokia an Microsoft's strategy seem to be working, with increased sales of Lumia.

In my opinion it would only be fair to judge WP7's performance at the end of 2012.''

Where did I say it was going to be a failure? I mentioned the fact that Nokia has a lot to prove to an Iphone and Android consumer being on WP7, which the majority of you will find, are former Nokia owners. Microsoft makes all the final decisions with the way the OS is run on a Nokia, they are already behind by a year and lack many features on the OS which were on open source Symbian which the Finns were too lazy to carry on with. What will entice me to purchase a Lumia 800 over say, a Titan? There's not much to differentiate one WP7 phone from the other, luckily for Nokia they have the hardware factor that unfortunately is just a recycled N9 form that has seen little change since last year. What I pointed is is very relevant to the argument, Nokia 10 years ago were the dominant force with technological research far ahead of everyone else, compare that to today where they are a former shell of themselves allowing the likes of Apple and Samsung to overtake them. The sales of the Lumias don't mean much when in reality, you are just purchasing a Nokia with the guts of an HTC Titan 2/Samsung Focus S against the revamped Galaxy S3 or Iphone 5 with IOS6, lumia 900 being an example. What is the defining selling point of this Nokia that differentiates it from another OEMs Windows phone model? If colour is the only thing that can help sell the Lumia 800 with Elop calling it the first real windows phone, they have lost every shred of dignity they have worked so hard for.

This video does not include the white version, and the magenta version is called fuchsia. Makes me somewhat doubt the authenticness of the video.

So you are actually in hindsight admitting that Nokia have fallen off the top and taken over by by both Samsung and Apple and what will get them back on top is a new colour.

What Nokia should have done was push Meego to the moon and continue on improving Symbian, where Belle is now is what should have been the strategy three or four years ago competing against the early Iphone rivalling its fluidity. Make no mistake about it, Nokia excel in hardware and brought many innovations to the market, but being top for so long has made them complacent. The Nokia I remember 10 years ago was an assertive and creative competitor, take the 7650, the 6310i/8310/8850/90/N95/7700/7710 and the 9210i communicator. This is when they pushed the boundaries where Motorola was starting to come short and put form over function, the 7650 was an awesome bit of kit for it's time, the 7610 was the first 1MP camera wonder which was recommended by a professional photographer. Whatever model Nokia released, yes, they weren't always the first, but they were damn sure the best at what they did. They never allowed thier competitors to outshine them.

Compare that to what Nokia are doing today by introducing a colour marketing scheme to boost sales. That to me seems a little complacent at best. The market today is a very different one, it's far more competitive than 10 years ago and technology is exceeding at a rapid rate with more players and with some from emerging markets now making thier own superphones. A new colour scheme to help boost sales is one way of getting more sales short term, but in the long term, you'll need more than that. Wake up and face the music, Nokia sold thier soul to MS and MS have the say on the OS which it, not Nokia, controls which will hold back the once great Nokia even further. The more that Windows also favours Nokia over the other OEMs, the more likely the other OEMs will take thier business elsewhere leaving a dead end platform with MS's WP7 and it's newly acquired pawn, Nokia on its own by which at this point will have a lot of catching up to do to prove itself in its ever increasing insignificance and decline in the mobile market where it once set the path for others to follow.

This is what they need to get back on top and leave Samsung behind. Now everyone can have a Lumia 800 in their favorite color. Samsung will soon make the Galaxy in more colors. They will copy Nokia for sure.
