What are you talking about? Iphone 7 plus easily outperforms 6/6s plus in every type of task. I know from first hand experience as it has more ram than predecessors and faster processor. It still plays all big games at 60fps on max settings. Most android phones can't even do that including newer android phones . Iphone also excels in photo and video editing. It's much more than a jewelery item.
Yes there are minor upgrades year on year and I agree not much difference from 7 plus and 8 plus. Similar can be said with android devices such as samsung s8,s9 and s10. All minor upgrades. I'm sure other brands don't have too much differences each year too.

First time in the industry a revolutionary ToF (Time of Fooling) camera in iPhone and our camera team worked extremely hard to give our customers the satisfaction and no compromise experience which they get with iPhone
iPhone is kind of leader just because of one thing and that is the support to their mobile users even after 5 years and that is because they don't even add any kind of true change or evolution to their hardware
What they had done since iPhone 6, increased the size and called it 6 plus
Added secondary camera for portraits that's all for 7 plus
8 and 8 plus were actually supposed to be 7s and 7s plus but they just named it higher
iPhone X was a good design and departure from ordinary Bar iPhones but what was different in real life Face I'd that's it and they added literally three to four swipe gustures in basic and now they call it revolution by their software department
And now they it will be consecutive third year and what is new this year a wide angle camera that's it
If you talk about interanls so every SOC is getting more powerful and power efficient with every iteration
What I hate about apple and iPhones that they are just an overly price piece of jewelry that's all
Like seriously a mobile.phone for 1500 USD one can buy a car with kind of money
And due to apple every OEM got their chance to increase price for their products
Apple is joke to tech world and its innovation died with Steve Jobs but it was his legacy that brought apple here but now things are getting harder for them and eventually they will loose what he created
Like 9 billion USD drop in share price due to resignation of an employee, it explains a lot
