I'm definitely buying this TV box, waiting eagerly for the 2019 edition. Was about to buy the 2017 when the 2019 news suddenly came in.

The reason why Apple and Nvidia can give good software support, is because they designed the hardware. They make the drivers. And can create a new upgrade.
The likes of Samsung, Huawei, MediaTek, RockChip, AMLogic, Allwinner, and VIA are simply incompetent and prefer to make the next chipset, instead of spending resources to update their previous platforms.
Whereas the likes of Qualcomm only maintain drivers for 3 years. So all OEMs here are handcuffed to what they can get from Snapdragon. Which is why Google is able to offer upto 4 years support (+1 year update without new driver requirements) with their large developer groups. However, most other OEMs can't be bothered to make a new Operating System with the new AOSP and drivers, that's why you only get 1 major upgrade instead of 3, which is why software updates are a joke. And yes, this affects AndroidOne devices too!!

If the truth is to be told, Nvidia still have the best mobile graphics GPU. If only Nvidia revived it's self into the smartphone and tablet global market in today's world. Maybe one day they will return, I hope so...For the others like Qualcomm, Kirin, they was playing catch up. just imagine a new Nvidia tegra cpu and GPU used in today's gaming smartphones, like the Asus Rog, Nubia red magic and xiaomi's sub brand blackshark. Only a dream...

Guess this days I'm with luck. Yesterday my nvidia shield updated to android 9.
Today I saw my htc u11 had an upgrade to android 9 also. Guess I will carry it a few more months. It's still a great device, btw.

Wow seriously why isn't anyone using Tegra chips anymore? 4 years running and it's still one of the best graphic SoC ever. Gaming phones should run Nvidia Tegra in the future

useless console ever, imagine you have most powerful android console on your hands but still you cant download 95% of games in google play store..then you download customer firmware and you will getting tons of bugs, glitches, controller issues. For me, if you want to buy it for gaming , forget it. Buy mi pad 4 or ipad mini 2019, at least you will not have bugs

I wish Nvidia revive their Tablet line with meaningful hardware for gaming/productivity. I also wish Nvidia enter in phone form factor as well with their hardware dedicated for gaming.

I agree, the entire Nvidia Shield Handheld, Shield Tablet, and Shield TV are decent/great products. The software support has been great. The only issues with them is their age.
Sure Cortex A15/A57 and 28nm/20nm were good technologies to be using back in 2013 but they’re pretty dated these days. Even a modest refresh to a 16nm Cortex A73 would breathe new life to the products, let alone a 5nm Cortex A77.
A part of me thinks, that Nvidia needs to become an Android OEM. I guess somewhat similar to OnePlus, using a Stock-ishOS. Nothing outrageous, light refreshes every 1.5 years and just a couple products: one phone (with JoyCons), one tablet (with Keyboard), one tv box (with BluRay). Myself and many others would buy all three, and upgrade consistently, as long as the hardware is solid and the software is supported well.... Nvidia would NOT be alienating its other buyers (Windows PC OEMs).

Phone business is pretty insane glad that global sales are slowing down finaly because people were changing phones every year and companies used situation and raised prices to crazy level.
There are absolutely no reason to change phone every year.
This nvidia example is great that you can see that companies can support their product for long time if they want. But Samsung, Apple, Huawei etc.. just need crazy profit every year from new devices. It is not about quality anymore but about quantity...

Google should provide 4 years of update and foece OEMs to update for 4 years too otherwise they will get heavy fine or will revoke their licensce

Nvidia shield came in 2015 with android 5.1 now it has android 9, 4 years of good updates. why is that a Tv box gets good updates and big companies like Samsung and Huawei don't push updates for a phone. They only do that for a year and that's it. We are forced to buy a new phone every year and is this becoming dangerous to the environment. A phone should get 5 years of updates especially the expensive ones. Apple shines in this department, android must do the same.
