Lol typical delusional nerd. Sure, go blame everyone else including your loved ones who don't care for phones or tech, cause they are always the reason why things go bad right? Regular people are to be blamed for increasing prices of electronics and stupid trend decisions like waterfall curved screens?

In the end, isn't it just the dumb decisions made by tech companies? phone sales are down cause tech companies are removing features and increasing prices but NOOO! by your logic, it's regular people who caused that.

Wow. You better not have any friends outside the tech world, cause you're basically making enemies with them.

So they buy a new one.

Then proceed to preach about environmental conservation on social media.

necru, 02 Aug 2019Your points are valid but please remember that not everyone... moreThose people who are not into phones/geek stuff are the reason why we are currently in the mess that we are.

Why android tabs are still getting made when Google themselves abandoned it by having their Chromebooks.

Why we are being sold nearly or totally irrepairable trash like Surface products with are held by GLUE, with battery replacement impossible even by Microsoft.

Why Apple gets away overcharging MAcbooks with i3 processors in 2019, and with soldered SSDs.

Why we are getting thin gaming laptops with bad thermals that throttle their cpu/gpu to less than what people paid for.

Why geek sites like GSMarena are overrun run with "normie" people that are tone-policing the "normal geek" discussions going on around here, which is supposedly normal.

It's the geeks who were the foundation of most of the things you and those people who are not into phones that you mention.

Why do you feel the need to go around implying that they should be ashamed of what they are doing?

of course the smartphone shipments will decrease , with phones costing at around 1000+ Euro's in my country (albania) nobody except the rich can buy them, by now there are phones around 200-400 Euro's that do just as much as a flagship phone would do , even with the headphone jack included ... so yeah , i hope that this massive gap between production cost and availability to the customer gets them back , it is time to see Apple's karma on every OEM :D

Jose213, 02 Aug 2019pretty confident that the shipments will continue to go dow... moreYou're right. Even mid-range smartphones are enough unless you want to show off how powerful your phone is. But after one year more powerful phones are there. So it is waste of money.

pretty confident that the shipments will continue to go down. Phones have reached the point where mobiles from 2016 and 2017 (iPhone 7, S8 etc) are still just as good and still do what most the majority of people need. Buying a flagship these days is really just for showing off that either have alot of money or are happy to go into debt.

My LG G5 is still going strong for a three-year-old smartphone. No need to upgrade when a 2016 flagship can still hold its own. And according to Avengers: Endgame, I can still use my Google Pixel 3 in 2023.

necru, 02 Aug 2019Your points are valid but please remember that not everyone... moreNot that I disagree with your observation, I just think that's a somewhat pessimistic view.

As ProJames-CHM commented above, people have been effectively "brainwashed" into buying newer devices that are objectively worse and higher priced than their predecessors. And it can only take a minority (say the richest 10% of the world's population) to really set things into motion.

Maybe we need to break the cycle, education is key, let's reduce the effect of fraud, false marketing, exaggerations, gimmicks, and psychological tricks. Perhaps the world would be a better place for it. You can start with your phone, then apply that critical thinking and rationality to every interaction of your life.

clearly the correct course for these companies now is to cut even more features!

Regular people don't even bother about specs or comparisons of these phones, they are not aware of who gives more/faster updates, which phone has more value per price, if anything people will look for a nice camera and perhaps one spec or another, or just go by what other people say or what they saw on an ad like most of the time happens (Thats why advertising is so important, if everyone would do a research then ads wouldn't have that much impact on those who really have no clue, you can sell your device as the best one on the world and people will buy it just because of that ad). If people would be actively looking for this type of information, this website would have millions of viewers every day, but not everyone is into phones the same way as you do. The phones will sell for as expensive or cheap that they can be priced, there are people for every model, specs and price range, most of the people don't care about price/value/specs and will just buy what fits them or even just chose something random, some others do mind and do their research.

"Looking further on, 2020 will be a bounce-back year for global smartphone shipments with an estimated 2.83% increase compared to 2019. This growth will be driven by the larger availability of 5G networks and phones from all established manufacturers," lol yeah that's a very optimistic prediction. I don't think 5G is enough to convince most people to upgrade their smartphones especially if the prices remain high and if the feature is exclusive to flagship smartphones. Worldwide smartphone shipments and sales will continue to plummet, these bland and impractical software and hardware features and gimmicks just aren't enough. 4G is still plenty fast and so are most peoples smartphones that are more than capable of doing everything that the user needs.

Kangal, 02 Aug 2019No, it's moreso the frustration of the consumers getting ri... moreWill you give us your money if we sell you something needlessly expensive with more of the stuff you want removed, but with more marginal improvements to the remaining things and new, useless and heavily advetised gimmicks that do not meaningfully improve your experience? While keeping in mind you do already have an older device that does everything you truly need it to do?

*- True question asked by ALL OEMs. Thankfully for them, people obsessed with awful pay-2-win games with high graphics ''quality'' are buying this solely because of that.

necru, 02 Aug 2019What a stupid comment section we have so far for this article. No, it's moreso the frustration of the consumers getting ripped off by OEMs:
                            - Faster Updates or More security - how about neither?
                            - Cheaper prices or More features - how about neither?
                            - Better Durability or Better repairability - how about neither?
                            - IP68 or Removable Battery - how about neither?
                            - Better audio or More compact - how about neither?

Case in point, compare the likes of:
Motorola Atrix, HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy NOTE, MacBook Pro 13 (Early 2011)
                            vs
Sony Z3 compact, LG G2, and Samsung Note 4-Exynos, MacBook Pro Retina (Early 2015)
                            vs
Samsung S10e, Google Pixel 3, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, MacBook Pro Touch (Mid 2019)

Since 5G is not available everywhere, no one would buy a 5G smartphone now.
