iPhone gets actual GPS receiver

17 Dec, 2007
Seems like the iPhone will benefit from an external GPS module somewhere around February. A GPS device to go with the preinstalled Google maps application is already in the works with a real...

it's ugly and not practicle, it won't stand up in your car anyway!maybe apple should have listened to their customers in the first place and added built-in GPS. this way it would've validated its expensive price tag more, and stopped 3rd parties cashing in.

An external GPS will surely work because it's directly connected to the phone. From there on, the receiver will transmit. Quite logical actually... So this ugly receiver WILL work.

if you need sat nav then just go out and buy a proper sat nav device i can see so many problems with mobile phones with sat navs, i dont think they are designed to cope properly with this type of software

Its a good idea while battery last. As soon as the battery runs out that GPS will have to come out real quick!

Google map is practically useless without navigational programs.

You cannot use a Bluetooth GPS receiver, since the iPhone only supports the Handsfree Bluetooth profile, so it cannot communicate with other devices save for Bluetooth Headsets. As for it being so ugly, well it is made by a single person, and we should respect that. You people have come to expect too much, and cannot understand the effort put into designing such a tool. Rather than whining about the poor aesthetics of a mere prototype, just try creating one for yourselves! If you cannot, then you should learn to appreciate the talents and know-how of others! Anyway, it is a small step forward for a poorly designed device such as the iPhone.

                          answer to previous posts:

*I agree, the accessory doesn't look that good on the iphone. perhaps a bit of streamlining and sleeker design is in order. ergonomics wise, can you really use this in a car? think of the additional carkit (is there any?)...

*Why not a bluetooth GPS receiver? because Apple iphone has limited bluetooth connectivity. If it cannot receive and send music and files, then an external bluetooth GPS is out of the question...

*Definitely, N95 is definitely better than this. A lot of features are built into that phone without the necessity of cracking the phone's OS firmware.

*iPhone has a forced existence. It is an innovative novelty and that's where it ends. More often than not, novice (or probably naive buyers as well as ipod loyalists) are tempted to buy this phone. If they know any better, they could just opt for a decent phone and an ipod touch.

Can't you just use a Bluetooth GPS receiver? This add-on will surely be more expensive than a Bluetooth one
