This doesn't reflect the true outcome of the voice assistant platforms. For instance Sony, Lenovo, LG, JBL, and others make Google Assistant smart speakers and smart displays. Some OEMs like Bose, Sonos, a few others make Google Assistant and Alexa smart speakers.

MadMel, 27 Aug 2019so high tech on cheap , that's nice ...When something's subsidized, there's always bubble, they're "selling" these at a significant loss to tie people into their ecosystems, but a lot of these will go to waste in the hands of people who don't know what they're buying, which is very common in China, and some more of these will simply be used as "dumb" speakers to play back music.
So in short I don't think these preliminary numbers prove they've actually got a foot in the door in the smart speaker market, in which the ultimate value is the data generated by people using their voice-activated cloud services through the hardware.

It's true, it's mainly marketing. These speakers were practically given out for free, like for around $10, but there's claims of eavesdropping by apps in China even without these speakers with microphone arrays that could listen around the house.
