Weekly poll: Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro up their game, but is it enough?

01 September 2019
With mounting pressure from competing brands, Xiaomi launched an actual Pro model this time and jumped to quad cameras.

Sort by:

Xiaomi (Redmi) is apparently choosing Microsoft's strategy of making every other generation of the product disappointing - Redmi Note 5 was a success, Note 6 was a failure, Note 7 was a success and now Note 8 looks like it's going to be failure again.

Note 8 is basically refresh of Note7, it provides virtually no added value over Note 7. Major issue with Note 8 Pro is the mediatek chipset; if Gcam won't be available on the Pro version, it's camera is going to get destroyed by Note 7 + Gcam.

Am choosing snapdragon over mediaTek any time..

          Realmi phones are far better.

GPU performance is poor compared to what they claim and lots of overheating. Xiaomi knew this and installed a heatpipe but still temps go through the roof. This is going to be bad for xiaomi

Last RedMi for me is my RedMi Note 4x, still works, but because of the full screen ads, will no longer buy any Chinese phone.

Mi Ui and mediatek have a bad history, just last year, the redmi 6 struggled with that p22 and it was behind many devices that used the same chipset, now this might not be a fair comparison between an entry-level chipset and a flagship one, but we might not see it's full potential on this phone.

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2019People have no problem with huawei's locked bootloader with... moreThey have problems with Mediatek especially via Xiaomi devices and I think I know why. I have 3 speculations:

                    1. Custom roms. Almost all Xiaomi devices with Snapdragon chipsets has the strongest base when it comes with custom aosp & custom miui, we can freely look in xda forums or in Telegram app. Due to the open-source nature of Snapdragon processors, there are many Indian developers out of many Indian consumers.

                    2. If you aren't into custom roms, then miui updates. I have read alot of Xiaomi owners with mediatek SoCs complain multiple times about this. What is baffling is that other smartphones like Nokia with Mediatek got some updates.

                    3. Previous bad experiences with past Mediatek SoCs. But Mediatek seems to improve alot yearly, at least on paper. If you experience good results with present Mediatek SoCs, please reply to my comment.

Since Note 7 pro didn't arrive in Europe, 8 Pro probably won't too. Also, I don't think this 64 mp samsung wonder is much better than a 48 mp. Otherwise it would have debuted in a Samsumg phone. Wide lense is good but with 8 mp quality is mediocre at best.

The SD665 in Note 8 is very weak compared to Kirin 810. So I rather have more power than a 8 mp wide lense.

Redmi Note 9 and 9 Pro will probably be with AMOLED screen.
Over year ago i bought Redmi note 5 AI/Pro and half a year later they had Note 6 with teardrop selfie cam screen as a little update. Then come Note 7 that had improved cpu and now 8 with little updates too. Next wait for half a year and there be even better one of them coming out. You can still buy Pocophone F1 for the same amount of money that you get this note 8 and have flagship specs with SD845. OR you get the K20/9T or K20 Pro/9T Pro.

They have pretty much every month new models coming out for all types of price range.

My phone cost me only 170 euro and it was out of the box with android 8. Now i have it on android 9 and 1-2 weeks ago i got August security update too. For the money i spent on the phone it was the best of what i did get on that time. I dont root a new or stock adnroid on it to get few pixel better quality with gcam i just dont see the point as i dont use cam a lot and it has decent quality for my needs anyways.

Note to manufacturers: I want to see 4000 MaH batteries, in handsets the size of S10e's... not just phablets!

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2019People have no problem with huawei's locked bootloader with... moreTo be fair, some MTK SoCs were easier to root and mod (keeping the stock ROM, though), compared to their counterparts. But there were still issues with overheating, too much throttling, and low gpu performance. Not saying this is limited to MTK, but that it was almost the rule of thumb for their SoCs.

This one may change all that, but MTK hasn't built a good reputation, no one would expect a radical change in a year.
