The ads are prominent in "cheap" markets like Asia, including their own home, but much less if not totally gone in Europe (and if I didn't misread, on first installation they mention it's part of GDPR compliance or some similar rules). Since Xiaomi hasn't launched any phone in the US, if you get one and you have ads, chance are you get one for the cheap market. Not that it can't be turned off up to 95% or so (the one in after every app installation cannot be turned off as far as I've researched), just take a little one time effort.
EDIT: I just found a way to turn off the ads 100%, the security checker also has a recommendations toggle, but since the app only runs after app installation, you can't really access it until you install an app, not really a big deal.
