Essential founder Andy Rubin shows tall and narrow upcoming phone with color shifting back

It's one of the weirdest designs we've seen in a long time.

Want to see how users watch the video or browse through stills, or even record vertical videos, they better not be narrow too or we may see [] kind of action.

that's what's called innovation and giving something new to the world, essential pH1 still running on latest operating system. I really impress with this chocolate bar. if the price is in budght then this brand has a bright future.

For those who want just a phone for communication and scrolling, this form factor is great and straight to the point. But for any other tasks (maps, movies, games) its not an option. Itd be like an iPhone se competitor for those that like one handed phones that are great for just being a phone... Don't know how big that market will be...

Unpractical, not even ergonomic. Maybe for the sake of do something different and see if someone buy it. This even surpasses Sony phones in the remote TV control phones. Maybe is that, a controller more than a phone but with calls added...

                  Couple questions.

How would one game on this?
What would watching videos be like on this?
And is Essential essentially trying to out do Sony in this whole tall narrow phone game? If they are, I think they're trying a tad too much.

What a lot of people are missing is that this is one of those 'anti-phones' - like that tiny palm device. Probably very dependent on a voice assistant, very focused on 'just the facts' presentation to simplify things and help you unplug. You're not going to be playing Fortnite on this, nor watching movies; you're going to be dictating messages, making calls, then putting it back in your pocket and experiencing Reality™

Rubin saw Sony's moronic 21:9 design and said "hold my beer"...

As an owner of the Essential PH-1 i wanted them to cut gimmicks like the pogo pins in the sequel and focus on the essentials, but they went in the completely opposite direction.

Watching movies and playing games on this thing is going to be a nightmare. This is basically the same design as the Galaxy Fold when it's folded and there is a reason Samsung didn't make the screen longer. I don't see this being anybody's primary device.

Also, can somebody tell Rubin to cut his nails.

Might be good as a second or backup phone if the price is ok but if its around €400 or higher I don't think many people will buy it.
I don't it is practical for people today to use this form factor I think the only people that will buy this will be ones that want to show off or tech enthusiasts or have very thigh pockets but if the price is around €200 or lower it would be good as a backup or second phone

Chris Smith from BGR is just awful. Why does this guy even have employment?

What I'm seeing is the potential from the UI. Not the design.

Nice but remember that smartphones are mostly for content such as images and videos which certainly be poor to consume in this form/display
