Essential founder Andy Rubin shows tall and narrow upcoming phone with color shifting back

09 October 2019
It's one of the weirdest designs we've seen in a long time.

Excellent design to be like a Card Phone with Bluetooth Dialer.

Oooh, a modern version of the Nokia 7280.

Certainly not for everyone, which makes it a bit strange from a small player like Essential, but still nice to see new shapes on smartphones.

The phone looks like a remote control.

Galaxy Note 7, 09 Oct 2019How on Earth is this practical? How on Earth is it practica... moreExactly, I was just thinking about watching videos in this hideous form factor...... You can't keep it inside pockets.... hilarious to see people carrying this in pockets...I am sure this is not a serious attempt

I'm mildly intrigued. And I'll give Essential credit for being willing to experiment in new and different ways. But it's hard to see something this different being the device that saves the company.

Really, though, I'm disappointed that Essential didn't just stick with the design of the original PH-1, while fixing it's major flaw, the completely mediocre camera not worthy of a flagship phone. And while they're at it, toss in a headphone jack. I still love the design of the PH-1. It's the best execution on minimal bezels and a notch. And the ceramic back was innovative in a good way, rather than in a gimmicky way (which seems like what's probably happening with this new phone).

You know, it makes a lot more sense to build on what you already got right, but correct the mistakes, rather than reinventing the wheel.

This might work if the segmentation is an affordable entry level device.
Not so lucky I guess if the price is on the expensive side..
Unique, not useful. Nokia 7360, everyone?

it's not a tall phone, just a skinny one. Based on the size of the hand holding this phone it doesn't appear any taller, just narrower than others. In fact, it looks to be about half the width of a normal smartphone. That fact doesn't seem to add much value for the user other than reducing the weight of the device which is paid for by offering less screen real estate.

This new narrow design is a gimmick and not a very useful one.

I love my Essential PH-1. I hope the company stays around.

Ha ha ha, I still using a 16:9 phone so every phone that has 19.5:9 or 21:9 looks like this phone to me. Ugly. I'll stick to my 16:9 phone as long as possible because the old iphone 5 meme of light saber phone becomes reality

But why tho? Such a thing won't even fit in a pocket. Might as well make it a sword but it certainly has caught some publicity.

Just a good screen, great camera, fluid software with timely updates and an impressive battery. That's literally all one could ask for. So if this dude wants "something different", he should've come up with a compact phone.

Where can you even put a phone in the shape of a flat dildo? In the pockets, won't necessarily fit. Looks plain silly but atleast it ain't my money burning there!
