Anonymous, 16 Oct 2019Personally I hate the distortion of ultrawide. I want telephoto. Huawei got it right. 18mm, no distortion, bigger sensor and good lens. I think it would remain usable for a much longer time unlike others which won't be used after the initial hype

There is something sinister behind the soli face unlock. Google is forcing the users to use that feature. There is no fingerprint unlock or pattern unlock feature available. Good decision that India's TRAI didn't let Google launch the latest pixel phone.

Vegetaholic, 16 Oct 2019Nothing can hind shitty phone sensors and hardware with com... moreDon't knock computational photography totally either. It is not the cure to everything, but offers interesting solutions to certain situations. In the end, it is another tool, with the usefulness being up to the user.

Love the Community, 16 Oct 2019Google should've asked Sony to add OIS and Dual Pixel AutoF... moreYeah, that's my biggest problem with them. If there is better hardware, why don't you use it?

Vegetaholic, 16 Oct 2019Nothing can hind shitty phone sensors and hardware with com... moreThat's not really right. The sensor mentioned here is not as bad as it seems. That sort of sensor is used on professional prosumer cameras used for professional productions, even though those cameras themselves are usually hampered in order to sell other more expensive cameras. The computational photography used on phones, and the type of camera arrays used for it, and how the image is constrained and handled and compressed, and the hardware to do that, is "shitty", as you say, because this is deliberately designed not to be as much quality as you can do.

Have you noticed that phone still image is improving a lot in a mediocre non pro way with AI garbage, but video is not improving much. The still camera industry is a bit toasted on the low end consumer level, when people can conveniently carry a phone instead. But for video, they don't want it competing with prosumer cameras (not that you don't have to do a lot of rigging to do that with a phone).

Google should've asked Sony to add OIS and Dual Pixel AutoFocus on the IMX586.

Google deserved to take losses just because they don't use IMX586 which is clearly a better sensor than the 3 year old IMX363.

There are way more situations when you need an ultra wide angle.

Nothing can hind shitty phone sensors and hardware with computational photography on phone like pixel 4. You can correct as much as you want but having such a bad sensor your pictures could only look good on phone screen itself, dont people fall for this computional photography nonsense

Recow, 16 Oct 2019Way to expensive, for a old chipset, 6gb of ram. maybe google have had to up the price of a trashy handset to offset the revenue drop from no longer supplying huawei with its services.

You can capture details of a full moon while still have the night landscape underneath the moon sufficiently captured with details. You use an app called 'Open camera', take 3-5 sets of 3 bracketed shots per set on a tripod, then merge them in Vibrance app. Or you can buy a $250 dSLR and use it with a graduated neutral density filter and take one shot and voila! Moon perfectly exposed together with well exposed night landscape underneath the moon.

It seems that they have found a way to implement variable exposure in a single scene.
I thought that Samsung was in a better place to achieve that since it has variable aperture Cameras in it's mobiles so they could like.... Take shots at f2.6 and then at f1.5 and then use info from both of those & so on & create a Variable exposure scene.

I forgot to mention, the dual pixel can use the two values, with or without other values, like surrounding pixels, to calculate an more authentic value and reduce noise. One of the pixels are likely to carry a more authentic value. I forgot, these claims above also apply to and cover distribution of points across different spaced pixels.

These schemes are also similar my schemes proposed last decade about multiple gain, and noise reduction, before market.

How they are going to get 19 stops plus is very simple. If the dual pixels are setup with dual sensitivity response, or with independent gain, they are set independently and with the overlapping response curves a hdr picture can be produced of higher specification. They can also extend the natural range of the sensor by cleaning up noise, which should be at least 16 stops, which are usually reduced to below 14-12 stops from these issues. Now it can't be validly patented, due to independent discovery and publication.

They basically killed this phone with cheap looks and absurd pricing. Basically no amount of camera gadgetry can offset that. Even iPhone 11, vanilla one actually looks like an even better value now at 100 bucks less...
