Samsung reportedly considers Ultra Thin Glass for its next foldable phone, a clamshell

16 October 2019
UTG is more scratch resistant than the material used in the current Galaxy Fold. However, it's expensive and difficult to manufacture.

I'm probably being paranoid, but I just keep thinking of folding this one day, the glass gives way, shatters and the pieces fly into my eyes.

Glass is glass more this more capable to break.
even a paper thin glass made of real diamonds wont be much shatter resistant from falls to concrete. And a 1mm thin glass is like a joke.

glass is not highly flexible as plastic; it will have a breaking point no matter what. why not instead work on making plastic tougher, clearer, and have better shape retention?

                        Folding glass. Wow

Anonymous, 16 Oct 2019I am sure someone will copy itLet's hope so, all things in the world is a copy if the original except the original. And because of copy, we get innovations and cheaper prices.
So u better pray for someone copy it... Ofc.
All Samsung phones is still a copy of the first smartphone, like cars etc. etc. etc.

So please stop whining and start thinking.
Be smart and don't follow all this screaming kids...

Foldable phone like a clamshell isn't what we need !! Just stick with the current design and improve it ( the most important thing is FIX THE CRAESE) and remove the notch and make it with S-Pen

AnonD-762416, 16 Oct 2019That's the Galaxy W2019. A real phone you CAN buy. Not vapo... moreNobody buys that phone. Infact there aren't even any proper reviews because nobody cares about that device. Microsoft's on the other hand is better and more interesting.

Clamshell designs will make a comeback in the next decade. Maybe even sliders where another display is underneath instead of a physical QWERTY. People should be fed up with the endless slab designs. It's basically the candy bar form factor from the previous decade (2000-2009).

I believe in Microsoft's design with their Surface Duo. I'm hardly a Microsoft fanboy either. I don't recall ever being excited about a Microsoft product before. I believe dual displays with a 360 hinge will be the most common factor throughout the 2020s.

The ability to protect the screen when closed, ability to make it stand, and fold out for a bigger display will gain popularity in 3-4 years. We'll basically see alot of phone designs like the Nintendo DS / 3DS. The Surface Duo is basically an "innie" and "outtie."

The biggest issues with foldables is its fragility. The Galaxy Fold is an innie and it's fragile. The Mate X is an outtie and will be exposed to damage. The Surface Duo solves this as the hinge is reversible and isn't really foldable. No crease.

Microsoft outsmarted Samsung and Huawei easily. And Samsung worked on foldables for 10 years and still couldn't get it right.

Stondec100, 16 Oct 2019Just adopt the Microsoft Duo design already. That's the Galaxy W2019. A real phone you CAN buy. Not vapour ware like the Microsoft Duo. It isn't particularly immersive with a split screen on a phone, hence these bending screens.
