I really wish this chipset from MediaTek would perform amazingly. It is going to be a great technology with best modem.

Mediatek has the make profits with soc...
Qualcomm can decide to loose money on some soc as they win to much on licence...

          Remember Helio X30 (this one is a true high-end...true, x10 and x20 weren't) :
          - latest Cortex A73 (like SD835's Kryo 2xx)
          - latest 10nm process
          - latest PowerVR GT7400+ (not that much smaller compare to iPhone's 7600+)
          - dual-camera support
          - 4k hevc encoding capabilities
And probably one of the bigger commercial failure.

You can undestand why Mediatek cut costs?

In 2016, profits on soc were around 12%, profits on licence were around 600%...

Normal profits on soc should be around 35 or 40%...
As some of these licences are on Standard essentiel patents, it's unfair and it's non FRAND compliant...and forbidden.
It was prooven that sometime, Qualcomm sold soc under its price.
For exemple to kill nvidia's modem activités.

Decacore is a good design...even if GPU is a little weak, X20 isn't a bad one (maybe Redmi Note 4 isn't the best exemple). You can see a very good CPU stability on some devices, far better than SD652 even on X25 (overclocked version)...
          But rumors were spread...
X20 at 2.1ghz heats, it was said...no matter if Mediatek managed to release X27 at 2.6ghz!

Decacore is a kind of 2+8...
Now, you see 2+6...and really fast ones.

Love the Community, 22 Oct 2019I wanted Mediatek to try their luck into battling flagships... moreBoth Helio X10 and X20 was mid-range actually. Former was rather succesful, but latter was a failure of course.

X10 was probably didn't cost much than Snapdragon 615 at the time and was very similar but much better. When Qualcomm messed up both Snapdragon 615 and 810, X10 was available.

On the other hand X20 was a failure for several reasons. 10 core design was just a marketing stunt. They have used 20nm node which was inferior for high-end class, and expensive without performance and efficiency gains for mid-range class.

So it was neither nearly good enough for high-end, nor cheap enough for mid-range. Snapdragon 650 just crushed it.

Mediatek doesn't need to reinvent the wheel. They need to stick with the conventional means. Use best available fab. Use newest ARM CPU and GPU without cutting corners.

One thing can made possible to outmanoeuvre Qualcomm is early access to ARM designs like Huawei doing at the past.

Just think about, we will see next next gen Snapdragon 8xx at the late Q1 2021. Let's call it Snapdragon 875. It probably will came with a semi-custom ARM Cortex. Let's call it Cortex-A78.

ARM will make available Cortex-A78 at probably around Q1 2020 for chipmakers maybe even before that, but it will unveil it later to public. If one chipmaker colloborates with them like Huawei did at the past, it can be available in actual smartphones in Q3 2020 just like Huawei Mate phones.

CPU wise stock Cortex CPU cores and semi custom Cortex CPU (aka Kryo) are too close now. Even the gap between Adreno and Mali are closed, when chipmaker didn't try to cut corners.

So theoretically Mediatek can release a Snapdragon 875 competitor nearly half a generation ahead. Think about it, 6 months no competition.

Chinese brands are releasing a lot of high-end phones at that half with kinda outdated Snapdragon high-end chips. They won't be shy about using that chip with at least 20-25% performance and efficiency gains over Snapdragon 865. Even they can steal the Pixel from Qualcomm.

The chip don't need to be much cheaper even, but if they can sell it cheaper than Snapdragon 865/875 with a single stroke Mediatek can be a real player at the high-end game.

But that upcoming Mediatek chip probably came with classic Mediatek cost cutting attempts and false marketing claims.

OK. What we know about it 7nm, Cortex-A77, Mali-G77 and 5G. Sounds good. Sounds like high-end, but not necessarily. For the cost cutting they probably will use first gen or equivalent 7nm manufacturing process, dual Cortex-A77 instead to quad, and probably a third or less GPU cores rather than required for comparable performance to greatest Adreno. They probably will use less cache for the same cost cutting attempts.

All in all it will be a great upper mid-range chip. Comparable to upcoming Snapdragon 735. It can be better than it, but false advertising it as a high-end chip will make it people snub at it.

Think like that, such a chip will be suitable for phones like successor of Redmi K20 (not Pro model) and successor of Redmi Note 8 Pro and plethora of Realme phones.

I'm more interested on Mediatek's new SoC comes with Cortex-A77 and Mali-G77 at 7nm.

There is two scenario. It might be a true high-end chipset more like Kirins. Or a slightly watered down model.

If it's a true flagship material, it maybe a blockbuster for budget flagships. Especially for likes Redmi and Realme... Also early access to Snapdragon 8xx is always difficult for smaller players. If Mediatek can develop a real contender and able to make ready timely, and price competitive it may be a gamechanger for them.

But I think probably it will be a rather Snapdragon 730/735 competitor.
