AnonD-44737, 17 Mar 2012elop says that symbian is dead after 3 or 4 years but they ... moreBelle is nothing like symbian used to be . Nokia Belle devices as nokia 701 is almost as good as any other devices and in some ways better than all the other.
I believe that QT and meego will be a platform long after elop is gone from nokia. Long live Nokia Carla and donna. if nokia take the same leap with carla as they have done in belle then nokia is above all other platforms.

AnonD-2663, 17 Mar 2012"Symbian" is now Nokia's R&D platform, so it'... moreWhere did you got that? Pureview has been developed on Symbian for years and there was no time to port it to any other OS (and WP7 camera API is too primitive. Pureview will be possible with WP8, though).

Nokia will probably still release a couple of mid tier and low end Symbian phones this year and possibly in 2013 and the rumors that the 808 will be the last Symbian phone are completely unsubstantiated (i.e. pure rumors) and based on some creative interpretation of Elop's statements. The reason why they are not true is simple: WP will not grow fast enough to replace Symbian during this year especially in the emerging markets and the current models will be old news by Q3. Therefore Nokia still needs the Symbian sales, even if they are dropping in absolute terms, during this year and probably even in H1 2013. That does NOT however mean that Symbian will be developed indefinitely. 2016 is still the year Symbian support will end, which means that the last Symbian phones will probably be released in 2013 or early 2014.

As for WP replacing S40: that is rediculous. WP7 would not run on ANY hardware that currently runs S40 and the low-end S40 phones have as little as 16 MB of RAM. There is no way WP will ever run with anything less than 128 MB, and considering the limitations of 256 MB WP devices, it seems unlikely that the minimum hardware requirements could be lowered from the current ones at all.

"Symbian" is now Nokia's R&D platform, so it's not going anywhere. Meego Harmattan and S40, on the other hand, are all but dead, soon to be replaced by Windows Phone.
What you'll see is the release of one new Symbian powered handset per year, bringing along with it ground-breaking technology such as Nokia "PureView".

Anonymous, 17 Mar 2012nokia fans, let's try to live in the present: meego will be ... moreelop says that symbian is dead after 3 or 4 years but they provide new updates, so i think they have to produce more than 3 sets next 3 years otherwise wth do we do with update, so new hardware must. it will be very wrong decission to destroy symbian. except wp they can release linux base low end phn and higher version of meego for dual core and hd resolution. without symbian and meego nokia loose their creativity like htc samy. i love nokia

This phone speaker is a fail, screen a fail, camera a fail, software is so~so~~ , limited app, no customization, no equalizer, no optional theme, can't be root (for normal and advance user) although mine is rooted which support apk file, and it can't download anything frm the net, so just get a bloody android and not waste ur money on this piece of shit which battery life sucks

Note to GSMArena: Symbian is not "Nokia OS" and neither is it renamed to "Nokia OS". The latest GUI for Symbian phones is called "Nokia Belle", but the OS is still Symbian. This is a especially critical question, since in reality "Nokia OS" is the OS behind the Series 40 and Series 30, and it has nothing to do with Symbian (or Nokia Belle). It is completely different code base. SO calling Nokia Belle "Nokia OS" is not only incorrect, it's also very misleading.

I was using a Lumia 800 the other day and I have to say it's absolutely beautiful - stylish, fast, silky smooth. Nokia's biggest hurdle, of course, is carrier support, or more specifically, sales rep's that are willing to put aside their bias and sell WP handsets ahead of android units.
