Anonymous, 29 Nov 2019Except the f1.7 on tiny cellphone lens is not same same of ... moref1.7 is f1.7. The so-called equivalent f number you talk about affects the depth of view, not the shutter speed. For the same ISO, f1.7 on a smartphone and f1.7 on a camera will use the exact same shutter speed. Consumers do not have f1.7 lenses on their cameras, so they make do with higher ISO to achieve the same shutter speed.

The rest is Computational Photography Algorithms. Downscaling and Pixel combining actually improves all aspects of the photo. Also, if the processor were capable and if the device had the right type of algorithms, they could increase the colour depth (apart from improving noise, detail and colour information).

THE-TRUTH-REVEALER, 30 Nov 2019I did not understand your comment and would like to enhance... moreIt's hardware as you're simply adding up the light information from 4 neighbouring pixels and treating them as information from 1 huge pixel... there's no supersampling or downscaling involved here, pixel binning is there to enhance the SNR and dynamic range. And that's the default readout mode for ALL Quad Bayer/Tetracell sensors.

Think it as this way: you're basically splitting 1 large pixel into 4 smaller ones with the same colour filter, which means you can't split it into 6 since that's not a square number. Technically you can split them into 9, but then it would be impossible to extract full resolution image without complex array conversion algorithms which destroy details, create wormy artifacts, increase noise and mess up the colours.

Anonymous, 29 Nov 2019They struggle because most users do not have the bright ape... moreNo, that's simply due to the fact that smartphone cameras FAVOUR far lower ISO value and longer SS than dedicated cameras to achieve the same exposure, and are capable of reduce noise more efficiently using advanced NR algorithms and real time multi frame stacking which dedicated cameras cannot do because of their less powerful image processors.

Anonymous, 29 Nov 2019No. Samsung will keep applying the heaviest NR among all ph... moreProbably that's where the high MP count could help the most - even after super aggressive noise reduction and sharpening, the photo would still look decent enough if you downscale it to lower resolution, say 10 or 12MP, and be better than what most other companies are offering with their 12MP/48MP cameras.
Though at this point I'm inclined to think that Samsung will revamp the processing algorithms from the ground up to utilise the full potential of the new sensor... At least that's what I *want to* believe.

I would really like to know, because as far as I knew till now, a software algorithm combines 4 MP into 1, giving 12MP supersampled images from a 48MP sensor. Genuinely curious.

Also, I am not actually just dividing by 4. Dividing by 6 in this case: 108/6=18 MP, and 9 in this case: 108/9 = 12MP.

Anonymous, 29 Nov 2019This tech is to have more control of HDR. It was never mea... moreSince low light in smartphones is done by HDR and multi frame image data, it is absolutely necessary to have atleast one frame (or more of a non blur image with good exposure) that is perfectly usable. The quad pixel, ensures one can get brighter images without as slow shutter speeds as would be necessary. Also all three colours would have atleast 2 different brightness of the same colours, ensuring the wavelengths vater to different brightness levels (including one for much lower light levels), and also have the image with higher dynamic range. Since some of these high resolution sensors also have full readout upto 30fps, they combine both these processing methods and have a final image which is much higher on both dynamic range as well as better at low light.
