What a bunch of insecure people! Keep thinking about spy spy spy! Whats there to spy about? Unless you are cheating on your spouse or did evil things.. there's NOTHING to worry about.

Every time you click on "agree the agreement", didn't even read, just OKOK. Then after that complain. What a bunch of crybabies. Blame huawei, blame the govt, blame country, blame police. But never blame the criminals or yourselves. Want to keep everything a secret.. refuse to share to improve systems, but EXPECT the system to improve.

"In a statement, a company engineer revealed the company doesn’t see any actual security risks."

This statement will be otherwise if the phone is not an iPhone but Huawei made phones.

Relax, Apple does it so that your data remains secure "location-wise", just an added layer of already secure data.

Anonymous, 05 Dec 2019Every OEM is mining your data. You have to be a fool to be... moreright. apple has location-based services/recommendation as well based on the data about you. apple claims the information their devices collect stays on the device itself and only is transmitted when necessary (when the device needs to send you recommendation on a browser, for example), then again it is a known fact that idevices sync data to servers when it detects the phone has not been used for an extended period, say while you are sleeping, and we are not too sure if the info collected about you is being synced as well to their servers.

here's my observation about this- i use an android phone (usually 2 at a time), a windows computer at work, and an ipad usually at bedtime. same thing with my wife. several years ago, we observed that whenever there is something we have discussed or checked online recently we get ads or recommendation/alerts relevant to what we have discussed earlier. we became concerned about our devices spying so we took measures to prevent our devices from collecting info, or at least minimize the size of info they collect. the personalized ads/recommendations stopped. we still get ads but they were random and not in any way of our interest (we don't use ad-blockers because we know that's how content creators earn their living). we ended up letting our devices continue with the spying as at least we get served ads we are interested in.

this applies not just to ads or recommendations- machine learning from the info they collect from us will eventually be useful in automating things in the inevitable interconnected future. a virtual copy of our own person is basically being built off of this data so that our virtual self can do things ahead of time before we need it or while we are not physically available. it's scary, i know, even kind of sci-fi-ish but this is our future.

Foxtrot2Novmbr, 05 Dec 2019LOL! Not every OS is secured. It will always be hacked.Easier to hack Android because the source is readily available. Bad people can study the code.. and find exploits

Customising Android created by manufacturers, may tweak and change these things, making harder to detect and find exploits unless leaked by insiders or reverse engineered.. much harder thou.

There is no magic to hacking.. and always, the first step to hacking is understanding how it works.

Turning off Wifi using control center, does not stop wifi also.

The reason is obvious, nothing to do with spying. But the functional aspect of the phone. Things like Airdrop / Wireless CarPlay will not work properly with wifi shutoff, or even tethered to another hotspot.

Most of the complex features now require every component to work seamlessly together to work. Simple users will not know it, and thought they can toggle everything off to prevent spying.. and YET want the features to work!.. Unreasonable.

But how and why it does it is always a constant struggle.
If company reveal all its steps and methods, its subjected to hacking (REAL spying) and leak of ways they can be copied by rivals.
If company choose to keep secret.. people will get suspicious.

But rest assured, unless you are a millionaire.. some famous actor.. or someone important or link to important work, there is little value in your info. Don't let your fear and insecurity destroy useful features and technology. Same like what US did to Huawei.. baseless accusations.

i don't think there is anything to be concerned of with regard to OSes collecting data such as location. see, this information they are collecting is used to "personalize" the OS to provide you better experience, or for AI to profile you better. as long as the information is kept safe and transmission is only done between machines without any human intervention. if you are diligent enough with your account/profile security, i don't think this is a problem at all.

now, it is a different story with how the Chinese government is handling collected information- it is an open secret how it spies on its citizens to enforce censorship and it is widely known as well that it has an entire government agency manually handling these information. there are reports of other things aside from censorship, but we'll leave those to the experts.
