Cheng is quite a competent guy and he managed to make a decent camera phone while in Lenovo. He also emphasized custom ROM support when the ZUK Z2 was nearing completion so he must have had a good understanding of how poor Lenovo's software support was going to be for their devices. The main problem of Lenovo is a lack of any clear strategy in the smartphone market and that has been seen multiple times over the last 5 years.

For example, text messages couldn't be sent or received.

What are these commenters even saying? Sometimes I think you guys think those behind the phones you're using are fools, yet y'all are using their products.
They hired a personnel that formerly worked at Lenovo; they didn't buy Lenovo… or Zuk.

abigfanoftechs, 03 Jan 2020Xiaomi is screwed now!
I know, as I used to own a ZUK Z2.
From a Zuk Z1 owner:
Good hardware....
No software support, not a single OTA came after the device is released, launched with android 5.1.1, still on 5.1.1..
RIP..

dbjungle, 02 Jan 2020I know Xiaomi is having a lot of success, but has Lenovo mo... moreFor their own brand, I'd say no. At least internationally.
However, they seem to have addressed Motorola's profitability. Even though they have made Moto less interesting to me with a much weaker updating scheme, no real flagships, and way too many near identical overpriced budget phones. Perhaps that's where they are saving money, at least short term.
I trust that the competent people at Xiaomi won't let this guy ruin their smartphone division.
Generally speaking Xiaomi has better hardware, firmware, camera performance and updates compared to Lenovo. So I must admit it is a bit difficult to see the benefit of adding their formwer cheif to Xiaomi's ranks.
He may also be a very competent person, just that he previously was stuck at a somewhat incompetent smartphone business at Lenovo.

Does this mean that Xiaomi will now have crappy call quality, wifi that keeps dropping out with errors when not too far away, promising and showing off cameras/models never delivered, and flakey quality with an excess of OEM extra monitoring software, and lack of certain features and keyboard problems messing up text in firm fields even the bits your not typing nearby, like with my Lenovo made products?
Xiaomi meant Quality.

ZUI isn't impressive. Full of bugs and no actual software update. This is good riddance for Lenovo as it didn't benefit the users in any significant way.

dbjungle, 02 Jan 2020I know Xiaomi is having a lot of success, but has Lenovo mo... moreFunny thing is that is the biggest question mark above my head when it comes to Lenovo phones!
I thought that they are at least doing good in China, but turned out it isn’t, I’m on vacation in China in 2018 and was looking for Lenovo store or smartphone stores that selling their phones( when they released the full screen phone the same time the mi mix 3 was released). Many of those stores that I’ve visited does sell any Lenovo brand phones at all!
