hw remosaicing sounds sweet. so hdr raw and bigger pixels. Now just appropriate processing and double aperture.

Chuck Norris, 07 Jan 2020Well, if you actually compare this to upgraded 108mp sensor... more1μm pixel after 4 to 1-pixel binning will give a pixel size of 2μm.

IpsDisplay, 07 Jan 2020Samsung's 108mp is theoretically inferior to this sensor
... moreI agree. The point is. On S20, you could either take 12MP shots at 2.4um or 108MP shots at 0.8um (which would not only be very noisy, but also take up huge chunks of space per photo). But with this sensor, you can either take 12MP shots at 2.4um or 48MP shots at 1.2um (which is far more useful than 0.8um & can hold much more detail).
I definitely want to see full resolution samples from this OmniVision sensor. I want to see a spiritual successor to the Nokia PureView lineup.

... moreWhat about separate chip to do the heavy lifting.
Never say never.

Anonymous, 07 Jan 2020Why only limited to 360 fps slow motion? That's probably 360fps without DRAM & Interpolation. Phones like OnePlus 7T provide 960fps with interpolation (technically only capable of 240fps); & phones like S9/XZs provide 960fps with dedicated DRAM (limited to 240fps without the DRAM).

Finally a decent sensor! Hope those huge pixels will have a great hdr output!
In the history of photography, bigger pixels means better images.

0.8 NATIVE pixel size is numerically 50% smaller than 1.2 this is a huge deal
This sensor might finally fix high megapixel images to not be as noisy and horrible
PLUS no ISP on the planet in The mobile chipset space is optimized for 9 to 1 (Nona Bayer) to efficiently and effectively utilize it so Samsung's approach will be bootlenecked by the Snapdragon 865
Quad Bayer however is optimized by the isp in the 865 natively

Still the Nokia 800 first with 41 Mpix had and still have the largest sensor in a camera in any cell phone.
But this is interesting as well.

Could it finally be a replacement for my old Nokia 808 ?
God, it's about time ! We shall see :)

Well, if you actually compare this to upgraded 108mp sensor in Galaxy S20, then Omni you will realize that it's 9to1 pixel binning allows it's 0.8um pixels to also be 2.4!! So basically identical!!😮
And Huawei P30 Pro from last year has 4to1 pixel binning at 1um plus ryb x2 filter so 1x2x2=4um. So Huawei can already do for the past year 4um output. But it has 25% smaller camera sensor making it's low light performance identical to the other two.
So OmniVision why not bring something that's not identical so we can have them all beat up up each other and one will actually win!! 😆

48MP at 1.2um... might actually look decent at full resolution compared to current 0.8um sensors. I'm intrigued.

Arr you sure that the 4 cell means quad bayer? The 1.2um pixel size is the same as in an iphone 8, could br that 4 cell means it's rgbw or rgby
