Anonymous, 16 Jan 2020Why are they allowed to copy Apple Watch both in looks and in UI?Apple was not the first with a rectangular smartwatch.

A rectangular watch is also so generic I don't think there is even any licensing for it, same as for round ones.

Even though they have similarities, they are also very different.

Apple focused on slimness and curved edges on the watch case/housing. Xiaomi focused on getting maximum battery capacity and therefore has flat edges. Xiaomi has nearly twice the battery capacity and does last about twice as long between charges.

Xiaomi's approach is better in my opinion, as what made me switch from smartwatch to band was the appalling battery life of smartwatches. Same with the hidden lugs on the Mi watch. I generally speaking like visible lugs on round watches, but not on rectangular ones. They are already long/tall (typically), don't make them even longer with external lugs. Well, I'm really not a fan or square/rectangular watches at all. But I'm happy to see a smartwatch at a great value, with good battery life.

I think square design will allow for the bigger battery, so when they make one that last for at least a week - and obviously brings more (useful) features than my 4-6 week battery life smartband, then I will reconsider getting a smartwatch again. If they manage to do it in a round form factor, I would be more excited :)
