108mp sensor is a hype. Go to the Mi Note 10 pro review and click on "Picture Compare Tool". Compare the low-light photo of the Mi Note 10 108mp to Huawei V30 pro and you can see that Huawei produces better quality photos. The V30 uses the same sensor as the P30 pro and Mate 30 pro. The 108mp sensor can't even beat last year's phone.

Getting a phone that takes good enough pictures at a high resolution making it possible for a large print is a great possibility.
And for those of us that do have APS-C or larger today, perhaps we soon won't need to bring our large and bulky cameras on family vacation anymore. I'm looking forward to traveling lighter. My wife hates it when my cameras and lenses take up so much space, but the shots they produce is hard to argue with. Especially when we both have tiny 12MP 1/2.55" sensors in our phones today.

I don't care about S20 because it hasn't officially been announced yet. The date is set to February 11th, but sadly it will most likely have infinity display and hole punch. Both things should be made illegal as they ruin the display. I skipped Mi Note 10 for the same reasons, well almost as it has notch instead, but same thing. Ruining my display experience.
9 to 1 limits it to 12MP shots in any scenario other than broad daylight. And 0.8 micron pixels really does require very good and even lighting conditions. So I hope they also have 4 to 1 binning option and the possibility for 27 MP to get more than tiny 12MP shots in normal lighting. Let's hope so. That would improve flexiblity.
But for now, a 48MP 1/1.3" sensor does appear to be the more versatile solution. The 1.2 micron pixels pixels are big enough in native 48MP for most scenarios except very low light, and then the binning comes in. In fact they are pretty close to the 1.4 ones in "all" 12MP 1/2.55" sensors.
The 48MP will be better for 8K video as well. The 108/27/12 does have some unfortunate sides to it, but again either one has the potential to offer much better images and video compared to those tiny and boring 12MP 1/2.55" sensors I'm looking forward to get rid of. But for that to happen, someone must place them in a phone with a flat screen and no notch, no punch hole and no huge bezels for me to be interested.

Very interesting (and amusing) debate between Huawei (Honor, Sony) against Xiaomi (Samsung)!
I am for large-sized-sensor and large-sized-base-pixel, for better signal/noise ratio and for faster read-out rate which is critical for video performance.

Makes sense coming from Honor, which is Huawei. They started the dedicated night mode in phones, that Redmi and Realme are now flaunting.

The Samsung S20 and S20+'s main camera will have a Sony-made 12MP camera with native 1.8 micron pixel, which is larger than you would find in the Nokia N8 ten years ago with native 1.75 micron pixel.
But then again, isn't Huawei's 40MP camera has a native pixel size of 1.0 micron pixel in the first place? So maybe, it could be that Huawei will keep using the same 40MP resolution but they will increase the native pixel size. That could be a possibility there.

That is why I like to bring my mini tripod along when I do night shots with the 808. Once I dialed in the necessary settings, the images does still look good.

Oh yes today's smartphone have superior low light photo (on paper), but I once printed a large frame unedited low light photo from the N8 and the Pixel 3 and guess what? The N8 looks so much better!

Effective pixel size is 2.4 micron. Not 1.6 micron.

Plus the OS is as good as dead today.
The CM1 shouldn't be considered since it's 21mm thick which is more than double the thickness of today's Smartphones.

This is a wise step forward. How many people actually print photos taken from phones on a billboard? I don't think we have that many. From my experience, most people click photos to post it on social media and everyone knows that Instagram and Facebook compress the photos to display on the site so what we need is a phone camera which will give better clarity instead of higher megapixels.
