Honor's 2020 cameras will bring larger pixels, not higher resolution

23 January 2020
The path to outstanding photos goes through a pixel size of 1 micrometer or more.

In other cases using a xenon flash wouldn't result in pleasing images.

IpsDisplay, 23 Jan 2020Finally someone understands Sony and even omnivision und... moreAs with everything there are trade offs. The 108MP sensor does for the most part take 27MP shots, but in broad daylight it does actually perform really well even in 108MP mode.

In 27MP mode it does have equivalent to 1.6 micron pixels making for potentially better IQ than 48MP at 1.2 microns and higher resolution than a 48MP binned to 12MP.

The downside of course is that this 180/27MP in it's binned mode does not support 8K video.

The 48MP OmniVision does support 8K, and at 1.2 micron pixels. If the rumors of the Sony gets confirmed then they will match this to the letter. I would prefer this solution over the 108/27MP, but both are much better than those tiny 12MP 1/2.55" sensors most of us are stuck with now, and have been for years.

Now if only the Chinese can stop adopting Samsung's annoying edge/infinity display and keep pop-up cameras until under display is possible then I'm happy. And if they switch out that awful pentile display matrix with proper RGB then I will be buying a new phone long before my original plan.

If the Redmi K30 had kept the pop-up then a pro version would have been very tempting, but not with that hole punch. But then again, only a IMX686 in that one, so I'll happily wait for a 1/1.3" sensor instead :-)

The Last Oracle, 23 Jan 2020Larger pixel than the 1.4 micron on the Samsung flagships, ... moreFrom this article, I can see:
          1. Huawei thinks 0.8µm is way too small for smartphone sensor, 1.0µm is a bare minimum -> here they don't consider the existence of sensors with 1.4µm or larger since they are not quad CFA.
          2. Their future flagships won't have 100+MP sensor because that would reduce the pixel pitch to under 1µm -> Their flagships already have a huge MP count, so they don't feel the need of increasing it significantly in future.
Hence I don't see any contradiction in their statement.

"Even the 108MP on the S20 series will be a 9:1 sensor pattern and will have the advantages of larger Pixel size as well as add it's own benefits"
Any significant benefit of going 9:1 108MP instead of 4:1 48MP that can achieve the same (or ever so slightly higher) light sensitivity in binning mode and better overall image quality in full res mode then? If there's any it would be nicer if you could tell me one.

Actually new OmniVision’s announcement's of a 48MP & 64MP 1.2 micron sensors looks very significant. Knowing OmniVision they will also be affordable so it's a duble win while also very advanced. 1.2 microns is a sweet spot between size & amount of light.

Pixel size is importamt when you use very high ISO values, like 6400 or above.
Phones that are usually shooting at night with ISO between 200-800, there wont be any effect.
Also, almost all phones cant even give decent result above iso500.

Samsung and Apple are the ones the struggle more with higher ISO among flagships.

"quad Bayer" and so on aren't "the same thing". There is more loss when you have 4 separate pixels, because it takes material to separate them. It's a trade of.

So to have the "perfect" camera sensor, the sensor size should be WAY bigger than 1/2 and the pixel size is bigger, and not the pixel count?

Larger pixel than the 1.4 micron on the Samsung flagships, or the 1.55 microns on other smartphones?

Huawei is also doing Quad Pixels, so they saying they aren't looking for higher resolution is funny and denial. The 40MP sensor is Quad Pixel sensor, after all.

Even the 108MP on the S20 series will be a 9:1 sensor pattern and will have the advantages of larger Pixel size as well as add it's own benefits.

It's fashionable to say things out of context. Luckily nobody has started saying that they will defy the laws of physics or some aliens will make sensors for them.

                              Finally someone understands

Sony and even omnivision understands this too

Omnivision OV48C and imx708 are basically 48mp with big 1.4 pixels sizes

Then we have stupid Samsung 108mp what a joke...

And as usual all the praise and hype about how great that sensor is... Smh

I think you mean literally all the current manufacturers who are still sticking with the same sensors which somehow were still able to improve their image quality via software algorithms. Mi Note 10 is about as close as you can get to their level. It's a shame 808, 1020 and CM1 didn't get an update.

Glad to know Huawei isn't going for the 100 MP gimmick. We need bigger sensors & larger pixel size. More megapixels should be secondary objective.

The upcoming battle between S20 Ultra & P40 Pro Premium will confirm which approach is more beneficial to quality.

Don't be surprised why Nokia N8 and Nokia 808 PureView from 2010 and 2012 respectively can still beat newer smartphones of today in low light. Huawei really has learned that you cannot cheat hardware physics. Don't make me mention Panasonic Lumix CM1 from 2014, that is in a completely different league.
