Why not get rid of front cameras, at least in some phones? I know there is plenty of people using it, but cant people use the back of their phones much better? Having 5-6 Cameras must make a huge difference compared to 1 or 2 cams on the front. I dont fancy face id in any way so that's not a valid point for me. BTW manufacturers release like 3-4 phones with every release, why are those phones all 6,7" only with varying cameras on the back and different soc? Why not have compact version (no front cam), ultra version (all cams there are), low spec version and one allrounder?! But who am I to tell the people what to do, sony failed miserably with this attempt---but thats because lacking innovation and having bad software behind great lenses...

"Let's face it - no one will buy a smartphone with a [...] sub-par selfie camera experience."
The phone can have no selfie camera for all I care... So far the Meizu's solution was the best one (miniature selfie camera in a tiny bezel). I don't understand why more manufacturers don't choose this design - I'm pretty sure if they did a thorough market research they'd figure out nobody's interested in these idiotic notches and punch holes.

it hurts that there are no pop-up cams anymore and everyone is going for stupid punch holes

- Its ok to be a bezel

I just really feel that this war against a 5-7mm bezel is totally stupid.
All of today's sensors can fit in a relatively narrow bezel but this form over function movement where aesthetics are the major driving platform I don't know of many companies that will stop this madness.

I dont understand whats wrong with the pop-up camera for selfie cam. It's there if you want to use it and it wont effect your screen space. Hole in the screen is effecting the screen use same is the teardrop or large bite notch that renders the side of them useless for full screen experience on watching video or playing a game. Meizu is only company that have it right. Just enough of bezel on top and bottom to fit in the selfie cam. I would like my next phone to be with popup camera or a 2 screen phone that have only main camera and the second smaller screen will be used for selfies and video calls. I am not using the main camera even much so i use even less selfie cam so i dont actually even need it. It's still good to have and use it for video calls time to time but then it needs to be either in a bezel or a popup. I rather have popup as that will protect the paranoia of someone accessing my phone trough net and turn on the selfie cam to spy on me. I dont have that paranoia anyways but for the people who have it is the perfect solution as popup cam

I thought I'm the only dinosaur who don't need selfie camera..never use it..and any display would look million times better without it..
I'd trade it for a 10V amplifier plus some good audio chip in a heartbeat..

No wonder Meizu's solution was the best when combating both bezel-less and selfie camera at the same time for the moment passing, with no notches, punch-holes, or anything kind of it, especially when IP6x certificate plays the major role in a phone (Meizu rumored to abandoned it this year with Meizu 17, which's a shame, and only currently-rumored Xperia 1.1 / 5 Plus to adopt the design from what OnLeaks shared earlier).

I cannot believe how many people here in comments are tryng to be cool saying that they would buy a phone even without a 'selfie camera'.
We get it, you do not click selfies, you are too mature for it, but for heaven's sake how are you going to make video calls? Will you ask for a display at the rear so that you can make video calls using the rear camera?
And to get it straight, the correct term is 'Front facing camera', not 'Selfie camera' and for a good reason.

I would! No notch, no punch hole, no weird design oddities, no misbehaving apps creating asymmetry... a dream. I literally never ever used my selfie camera in any of my devices.
Unfortunately that's not an option that the industry wants to give. I'm stuck on my Note9 for now.

yeah, sure... polichinelle's secret...
I wonder, how many would buy a phone without front camera but at a lower price than one with the said camera? i'm one of them, for sure...

A little top bezel(thin) won't hurt.
It can house front firing speakers and dual/triple camera setup along with a bunch of sensors.

I am pretty sure all of the guys here would have a better display rather than a better camera...But release a phone with that tech, there are people like me who don't care about selfies anyway
