Most interesting bit of article for me is how the Samsung A series cannibalised the S and Note series. Makes perfect sense to me, as most peoples phone needs aren't growing at the same pace as the top spec requirements.
When you mostly do light web browsing, listen to music, send emails, watch a bit of youtube, what features do you need?
A mid-range phone now has a decent screen, often with a small notch/teardrop.
The battery life on every generation, irrespective of range improves, which is often a big selling point for buying a new phone.
Wrap around screens, the very latest camera technology, haptic feedback, face unlock, etc these are all luxuries that are outside of what people actually need the phone for.
Its like comparing a Porche to a Ford. Most people need a run-around, but for the most part we are told we need the top range vehicle. They will both cover what you actually need, but the Porche will make you feel fancy.
Unlike cars though, the depreciation on phones is even faster. You are out of date within 6 months and the value practically halves. I chalk up the release success of smartphones almost entirely down to naivety of the consumer and the simplicity of rolling contracts and yearly upgrades from carriers, but even that game is getting harder.
Apple isn't immune to this too, I still see the iPhone SE more than any other iPhone in public because it is what most people need and upgrading doesn't feel as necessary.
In terms of robustness and longevity, I don't know what the failure rate on Xiaomi is, but the support network, at least in Europe is likely to be vaguer as the brand is less established there and the places to purchase are less through high street chains and more places like eBay and Gearbest.
It is always going to be harder to have that support until those brands get bigger, but tbh I've never had a problem with mine. Two Xiaomi phones in over the last 4 years, both under £200 (currently on the Mi 9 SE and very happy) and never had a problem.
I feel like the biggest problem is screen breakages anyway, and that is more customer misfortune than a big failure from the manufacturer, the only thing that is harder for those smaller brands is screen replacement. But when I can buy ~5 Xiaomi phones for the price of the latest Samsung or Apple, then replacement feels far less of a problem!

Well i wonder what people sees on these chinese phones.
If Xiaomi or Meizu or Realme or any other chinese manufacturer makae, create and do a phone for a 200 bucks and sells it for 1500 like apple it will be their decision.
If Any of said companies after a 2-3 years will sell the same 1500 eur phone for 1000-1200 it still will be their decision.
As long as we will fuel the greed of the companies we cant expect any change or a lowered price to something everybody can afford.
Companies gets ony richer and people gets only dumber if they find valuable something which have a lifespan of 2-3 years and after that its just a pure luck and good care of user if the phone will lasts longer.
And finaly there is nothing like better and worse company because if for example Realme makes a genuinely same phone like XS pro max the pricetag will be maybe 25% increase from manufacturing price or no more than 50-75% but not 300 to 500%,

1. iPhone 11 series is durable.
2. iPhone 11 is the cheapest of the series.
3. You can't buy XR 256GB anymore. Or even 256GB iPhone8.
4. You can't buy XS / X series anymore on their stores.
5. 11 rival xr / xs / x 's camera performance while providing more storage options.
People who need a new iPhone, will likely pick 11. It has nothing to do with the naming, but rather the line up of the phones and its price. People already invested enough money, they will most likely not risk buying third party XS max / XS or X.

Because it's newer and people will praise them more. Xs is just looking like X too much which is a 2 years old phone.
BUT. I do believe that iPhone 11 sold well because it's cheaper than Xr at initial price. 699 for class-leading A13, 4-5years iOS support, excellent display despite not having FullHD and basically every basic features that should be on a smartphone such as ip rating, stereo speaker, great cams, etc.
Ugh yes, headphone jack should be there too but that's how capitalism works. They can control us.

1. Apple has their own set of smartphone tiers.
2. Their flagship would be the bigger one iPhone 11 Pro Max (not necessarily, arguable but that's what it is).
3. Anything lower than that would be their midrange. Lower than midrange would be the Entry level. Their low-end would be their SE, or the one with "c" suffix.
That is when you're only considering Apple's own ecosystem.

Apple's renaming strategy paid off.. Their users don't know that the iPhone 11 is not a flagship but a mere entry level model.. Just like iPhone 5c and iPhone XR.. Some ignorant people even paid top dollar to downgrade from iPhone X/XS 1125p to iPhone 11 828p.. Meanwhile Android flagships rocks 1440p/2160p.. LOL
