Kudos to Samsung who likes to experiment with form factors (remember the Galaxy Zoom, Galaxy View, etc?). But this will end up being one of those, with its software abandoned in a year or two. If you have the money to beta test this, more power to you. Majority of people will stick with the tried and true Galaxy S/Note/A phones.

Hildr, 10 Feb 2020This ^^^ "Okay, let's fold a smartphone so it is smaller... moreAs a Engineer you should know, dust is more dangerous if the screen folded completely flat because the dust will be crushed/rubbed between 2 sides screen. But if there is a gap the dust won't be crashed/rubbed between two screen. There is a downside of having the gap too.The gap isn't good for pressure. Because it might break the phone while.

The gap which is dangerous for screen isn't this gap, it's the gap between the hinge and the screen. Initially Samsung galaxy fold had this gap and some unit had suffered with a broken display for that, so they closed the gap and everything was okay. at least 95% okay. Now Motorola Razr has almost no gap between the displays while being folded, But Razr has the biggest gap between the hinge and the display. I guess while being a great concept for folding , this one fault might cost Razr sky high.

AnonD-908380, 10 Feb 2020Prices are supposed to stay the same after years of develop... moreEverything's prices increase with time. If the design and building structure were the same as 2012 the price would be same. Frankly speaking the note 3 had 69% profit margin which is the highest for any Samsung device(excluding fold tech), The popular iphone 5s had 74% profit margin.
Now Samsung gets around 55-60% profit while Apple gets 65 to 70% profit.
And trust me no one (except Xiaomi) has better value than Samsung.
Let me give you an example.
When Samsung released curved S7 edge. That Year Huawei had released a curved phone too which priced at 1499$. The latest example is the folding one. Samsung fold cost 2000$ and Xiaomi mate X cost 2700$ while Samsung has 2 display and more camera.

Fayth, 10 Feb 2020there's still a gap when closed This ^^^

"Okay, let's fold a smartphone so it is smaller to get into pockets. Ho, don't forget to let some opening when it's closed so the dust that is carried by those pockets enters and scratches the highly scratch-able screen!" (even if it was pure glass, dust is the worst thing that can touch a screen. Keys in pocket will do less scratches than dust)

          WTF are they doing/thinking?
I don't really care about, the cost, nor this phone, nor about Samsung, but as an engineer, it doesn't look that hard to close the gap with side parts. And far less stupid. To be innovative is a thing, but justifying and old bad choice (gap in G.Fold) by doing the same in the next one is not really wise.

With your logic we should be paying double the amount on every new phone model. Flip phones already happened once. A folding OLED display with planned obsolescence, given for how long both technologies existed, should not drive the cost this high. A little, yes but for usual smartphones it makes no sense.

Things advance and replace old tech, the price stays the same. They just want more and more money and make repair impossible aswell. This is just another cashgrab, like brick style smartphones for over 600 bucks. Too bad people like you keep falling for it. Guess you need something to boost your ego lol.

Then the smartphone build cost was 200$ and retail price was above 500$. Now the cost is ~350$ to 500$ and retail price is 900 to 1200$ . And these costs are just parts price, excluding development cost, marketing cost and labor price.
So, if you really care about price you should stick to 600$ smartphone. Don't look at the flagships.
