Galaxy S20 Ultra's 108MP sensor captures twice as much light by grouping 3x3 pixels

12 February 2020
Samsung calls this "Nonacell". The 108MP sensor it builds for Xiaomi uses Tetracell instead (which groups 2x2 pixels).

The 108mp images are usable in daylight. At night, it's better to use pixel binned 12mp mode.
You are the only one that is confused. Quad Bayer, Nona Bayer all can function like a regular Bayer too (output won't be as good).

DroidBoye, 14 Feb 2020I stand corrected. It should be 3x3. lol. Were you talking about pixel binning ?
Or it was about CFA !
I thought you were talking about CFA.

I didn't get any info on this.
But if it's 9*9 then this is huge and complicated.

Samath N8 808 owner, 14 Feb 2020But if each individual color has 9 adjacent subpixels, it w... moreThe Sensor is 108MP.
The nona bayer's CFA isn't like what is shown here.
Originally the sensor has 9 pixel(3*3) combined of Red, blue and green; not a single color that's shown here. Actually it's not even clear yet what type of CFA combination this Sensor use. The sensor can change it's pixel color sensitivity when it's needed.
Now the 108MP photos are dull(darker too) because when it take 108MP photo the pixel size is .8 micron where after combining 2.4 micron. That's significantly large. Thus 12MP looks better than 108.
For example , Samsung galaxy S6 had 16MP and S7 had 12MP camera. The s6 camera is much noisier because S6 16MP sensor had 1.12(not 100% sure) micron pixel size compared to 1.4 micron in S7.
For this reason S7 camera produce better photo than S6.
Thus combined 12MP is better than 108MP.

Nonabayer will not work in good quality. At best, you can expect a quality like a 48MP quadbayer sensor gives in 48MP mode.

AnonD-754814, 13 Feb 2020The actual resolution is 108MP. Much higher than 33MP.But if each individual color has 9 adjacent subpixels, it works like 1 giant subpixel itself. So, in all the output is 12MP.
Now, we can interpolate it to 33 or any figure, but the quality won't be there.

There's no way the entire setup can generate 108MP output, without the noisy output.

This is still not adding up, something is wrong here.

GSMArena's title suggests that the total light intake by the SENSOR will be doubled, and that's just against the law of physics.
