Samsung Galaxy Z Flip teardown finds the glass beneath a protective plastic layer

19 February 2020
Like on the Galaxy Fold, the plastic protective layer is essential to the display's operation and cannot be removed.

Here in Slovakia it already cost from 1420 to 1580 euros.
Still a bit less expensive than S20 Ultra with 16GB ram.
Still its a crap foldable phones because its durability is completely worthless.

Sometimes I wonder why they can't just put this ultra thin glass at the middle crease only for folding purpose and gorilla glass for the rest.

Dismissing something just because the content is miniscule? Don't blame physics when your building collapses because the steel beams are missing *a miniscule amount* of carbon. And don't go to the bathroom when your food is contaminated by *a couple* of
Salmonella bacterium. It's just miniscule right?

The previous Fold's screen showed bumps and lumps when it failed, obviously this screen will not ever exhibit such a phenomenon with the glass layer keeping it flat. It will also be more pressure resistant to begin with. JRE punctured it with his hand, but if he measured the force required to puncture it would be clear that a layer of glass is still an improvement compared to the pure plastic folding models.

Haha. Who cares if there is some kind of glass somewhere in there, if it doesn't do anything? Glass has a function. To be scratch resistant.

You could put diamond under the screen and call it a diamond screen. Guess what? If the outside is still plastic, and it scratches like plastic, I'm going to call it a plastic screen, and the glass/diamond/titanium/gold/whatever you put UNDER the plastic for advertising purposes is useless.

Samsung not only did use glass, but it's also real flexible glass. It's not false advertising, you're just disappointed it didn't live up to your expectations.

The name of the one of the forumers here is a perfect test on saying if the screen of the Z flip is glass or plastic.

The DUCK test: "When I see a bird that walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck."

With the Z flip screen: "If it looks like plastic, feels like plastic, bends like plastic, and scratches like plastic, then it most likely is plastic".

Calling the Z flip screen "glass" because it has a small amount of glass is like calling the air we breathe as "carbon dioxide" because it has minuscule amounts of carbon dioxide.

Now, if you have to defend Samsung's false/misleading advertising, it just means you believe in a "half truth". Plain and simple.

If the plastic is on the outside of the glass, then the glass doesn't really matter. The plastic is what scratches, and you'll have to look at the scratches whenever you use the phone.
