Nubia details the new active cooling fan solution on the upcoming Red Magic 5G

29 February 2020
Just because Nubia is only competing with itself on this particular gaming phone feature, doesn't mean improvement is stagnant.

Honestly a lot more hot air in these comments then anything else. The only thing that sucks is the company support. But what do you expect from China? And 500$? I'm getting every penny worth. This thing will still smoke most made this year.

Freeman, 01 Mar 2020will that make the phone slow? Just asking. A bit, but has higher external temps and compare to others gaming phones with normal and (very important) no noisy heat pipe cooling is bad: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Nubia-Red-Magic-3-Smartphone-Review-8K-videos-and-active-cooling.424873.0.html#toc-emissions

PongHu, 29 Feb 2020Yes, it seemed Zack in JerryRigEverything has once question... moreOutdoor isn't even the biggest dust offender. It's pockets. Fine dust and lint created from clothing friction creates fine dust which just stays in the pockets and goes into all the vents and creases of devices. My iPhone XR constantly has dust covering the fake speaker grill at the bottom (the actual active one seems to clean itelf with soundwaves) and the Silent switch also has a lot of dust. Can only imagine having more of this stuff inside phone if it has huge gills for airflow...

IpsDisplay, 29 Feb 2020Can you expound on micro fins please?as you can see from cpu cooler either pc or laptop, they are using fins, the heat from cpu channeled to these fins then the air blows through these fins dissipate the heat away. These fins making heat dissipation process more effective.

Many reviews prove that the fan on this Nubia (at least Nubia 3) it doesn't make anything and is noisy.

Right. Now what's left is some inlet to put some liquid nitrogen in and we're good to go!

Even if you use it indoors only, it will still accumulate dust over time. Then imagine the users who use this phone outdoors a lot.

The integrated fan is really pointless. But even if it has a self-cleaning feature dust will still tend to stick on surfaces, so they can't be removed. I would rather have a separate fan, that was what the ROG Phone makers did.

DroidBoye, 29 Feb 2020I really hope that this type of design would gain traction ... moreI totally agree... As some already know. I own a red magic 3s. And it must have the fan on to stabilize the temperature especially during heavy, demanding and highly intensive game play. For example my recent score on Call of Duty was 65 vs 3. Basically our team got 65 kills and the opposite retained 3 kills...

I don't feel comfortable with a gaming phone without some kind of active cooling.

My phone obviously has impressive active cooling.

And rog phone 2 has an additional add on.

And the xiaomi black shark 2/pro has also an add on too which is the biggest fan on a gaming phone I have ever seen is mightily impressive.

A true gaming phone honestly needs a fan because gaming phones really help the player in so many ways. And the games feel so much sharper and quicker even with maximised graphical performance... So to handle all these extra gaming tech features combined really taxes the CPU/GPU.

So for me to use a gaming phone without some kind of active cooling makes me nervous because the way I play is intense, quick and diligent. I leave other players in the dust usually, unless they have a device that can also provide the same gaming superiority. Only gaming phones will give the player superiority. No other device can do that. Only a proper gaming phone.

So essentially it is absolutely critical that gaming phones have either active cooling or very large passive cooling designs... They must run cool. These gaming phones are pumped up. They really are monsters.

                      Not for children.

hope they have implemented microfins into their heatsink/exchange area, not just flat surface area like its predecessor, bcause using these fins could give better cooling performance

                            Any actual CFM numbers?

I really hope that this type of design would gain traction on "gaming" smartphones which is a must to be honest. Another implementation is to run the intake on the bottom of the phone. Which means that the cool ambient air will pass through the battery first, cooling it on the process while still exhausting the air from the processor to the sides.

Internal active cooling is always better. The main problem with passive copper heatpipe cooling is that they usually run under the battery compartment, which is what the battery hates the most. Most users that game for a long period of time has premature battery failure or swelling because of excessive sustained heat produced during gameplay.

Anonymous, 29 Feb 2020Wow with this fan and its battery i will able to play game ... moreActually, what I forgot to mention. Such advanced cooling designs to further clock the CPU, require better battery technology like silicon nanowire batteries, with 10x the battery charge. Then you can do a lot more for longer.

But, the issue is that you are still burning a lot more energy and producing a lot more heat. So, the designs can accommodate that, a lot using new techniques, but the hot air/heat, has to go somewhere. Porting the excess heat away from the user helps, but it backs up the heat transfer requiring energy to move more heat. Ultimately, you get to a point where so much can be done comfortably then you just divert extra battery capacity to battery life. When we get into next gen computing a watch could have more capacity then the next generation PlayStation or Xbox. But at this present time, we might do 10x more by not over clocking chips (most chips are actually overclocked to get higher speed which produces a lot of energy heat leakage) and various energy conservation efforts.

I do hope this doesn't become a norm though, having a fan in a mobile device is just bad. Not only it kills water resistance, it's another failure point and dust can become an issue over time despite self cleaning design.
