The Microsoft Surface Duo could arrive ahead of schedule, but with last-gen hardware

29 February 2020
We could see the new form-factor handheld as early as Summer 2020, but it will probably be rocking a Snapdragon 855.

However there is a lot of shortcomings that you'll have to battle everyday due to immature software to fully use the dual screen. Example: (no) rotation of home launcher among other things.

Here's hoping that the Duo will have a much better experience. If Apple have taught us something, it's that experience is more important than hardware features or form factor.

You have stock Android and very lightly modded OS such as Google's Pixel 4's OS and OxygenOS in OnePlus series. Both mentioned OSes have good efficiency and do not stress the phone enough to slow down.

iOS is faster than OneUI or any other heavy skins of course, also more efficient. But doesn't seem to match stock Android in my opinion. It does take up less RAM, but Apple intentionally caps their handsets RAM, which is not very acceptable. They, at least, mitigate this with a powerful chipset.

Classic Microsoft on mobile. Bad designs, bad decisions, bad outcomes. I mean, it's too big to fit in a pocket. What the heck is the matter with Microsoft's decision makers?

Why not just get the LG V60? It's a dual screen with 865. It doesn't have that big ugly bezels. I bet it's half the price of what Microsoft wants.

I think Microsoft is going with "last-gen" specs is due to the fact that it is so late to the game, as many OEMs already have some sort of foldable phones/accessories available today!
IMHO, I think it's a nice move though because it means more choices for us 'consumers', and hopefully more competition in the coming months.

Anonymous, 29 Feb 2020ARM based processor will be perfect for less loaded OSAndroid is one of the most heaviest OS ever, as heavy an unoptimised Windows 10 on a PC.

It's extremely taxing on the CPU, since it has to load the entire Linux Kernal on the background, which equals 5 million lines of code running in the background.

Fuchsia OS with it's Modular Microkernel is expected to run just 15,000 lines of code in the background, huge savings on CPU power for Fuchsia OS.

With Fuchsia OS , Google's operating system will slingshot past iOS in effeciency, power consumption and everything you can think of.

Fuchsia is in Final internal testing phase at the moment.

I want this but they need to polish the UI and price needs to be reasonable. If it's only $800, it's a buy for me. I'd rather get this than the Razr or Z Flip for that price. Foldable displays are still unproven.

Good news if it comes earlier but prices needs to be reasonable if using last year's specs. I really could care if whatever Snapdragon it has because I'm not a gamer and don't notice differences between a Snapdragon 670 to 710 to 835 anymore.

The idea is to add functionality in the dual screen setup in the software and that apps will work accordingly. This has not been the case in any other hinges dual screen devices.

I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully, the last gen hardware and huge bezels will keep the price reasonable. As long as its not too expensive, I'm almost sure I'll buy this thing.

I don't get the point of it, it's nothing new there have been many hinged DS phones/tablets so what's taking Microsoft so long to release it and why didn't they go with foldable display cause that's the future even LG like DS accessory would be nice
