Xiaomi reportedly abandons work on its custom chipsets

Remember the Surge S1? Probably not, since it only powered one phone.

Apple has best soc division in a world. Their chipset are mikes ahead of competition, and you telling them drop all this and go buy chipset from competition and waste all money for optimizong thrm to their software? Wow, very "celver" suggestion from you

        I love them both too.

Well knowing that CPU and SoC are way more than just a calculation unit, but they actually have to integrate lots of standards without trying to force their own proprietary into the mix (and I don't know how Xiaomi behave for such things), but more importantly it is also lots and lots of security and optimisations that have to work with ALL phones, I am actually happy this happen.
Not that I am a Qualcomm fan or that I like one having dominance, but I'd largely prefer another chip maker independent from his own brand to make chips, and that for many logic reasons we might all agree on.

What I like about Qualcomm though, is both their 3D Sonic Max ultrasonic underdisplay fingerprint scanner, who spec wise (though there isn't any real world experience from multiples users in many conditions yet) it is the incontestable king of fingerprint scanner by a huge margin, but they also partnered with Trinimax, and Infineon to make quite incredible 3D facial recognition code, chip integration and signal processor treatments, and hardware.
And I would really like that either more phone integrate those solution OR that companies do an equivalent as 2D facial recognition and optical fingerprint scanner are seriously unsecured and almost an outdated tech now.

Compagnies making their own coprocessor and other dedicated chips can be great, but their own SoC I don't believe that it can lead to anything except negative things for users, like Samsung and their stupid Exynos thingy they force into EU...

Nice attempt trying to judge a person's cellphone brand through a comment. By your analogy and comments over the website, you must be some kind of hotshot that shills over Galaxy devices eh?

Talk about knowledge, go do your an in depth research on Xiaomi's full ecosystem before talking about knowledge, muppet.

I don't blame them. Chip development is expensive - especially if aiming to stand out against the competition.

While it stifles innovation, its probably a right move given how Xiaomi's revenue isn't largely based on smartphones. The profit generated from their IoT devices and home appliances far exceeds that.

Look at how Samsung threw tons of $$ into the RND for their customed Exynos Mongoose SoCs and decades later they ditched it and is returning to ARM designs.

I can only pin on Huawei's Hisilicon Kirin and Mediatek's Dimensity to give Qualcomm a run for their money.
