Google I/O 2020 is fully canceled, won't even take place online

20 March 2020
Unsurprisingly, this is related to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic.

Other than the major new version and hardware announcement, the rest like new APIs etc can be done online via webinars and such.

        Ok Google 😊

Hopefully this sets a new trend of Android silent updates. There’s really no point in having an event for a new Android version when even the previous version was only being adopted to a small number of devices. I mean what’s so great about announcing new Android 11 features when it would be only available on Pixel devices for the first half of its life?

Android should just go like Chrome, silent updates. There’s no really new fancy features anyway. The OS is mature.

Okay Google, will you at least launch the Pixel 4a? That's the only thing I want from you... Pretty please!!

I'd make for a terrible economist most likely, but...
If you call this "huge losses" (whatever the event/product launch), then I wouldn't mind being the epicentre of said losses, as a corporate.
It's bad if you had everything ready and wasted a lot of money.
Is it THAT bad otherwise? Don't think so. You don't have to do ANYTHING anymore. Half-bake a dedicated webpage and do a half-baked paper launch. Is all. Production is another story... but hey, it has things to do with another department, I guess :D

Conspiracies are no good but even if they have nothing to do with this... IMHO vendors and t e h c companies right now may still be at a small non-obvious advantage

I don’t get it, is this thing communicable via internet now?

Maybe it’s jumped species again and become a computer virus?
