I always put myresolution to 1080p manually, so they can do whatever they want, and if they block me from doing this - I'll stop using youtube.

I always use SD so....thanks I guess? For making it the default..because sometimes it's auto HD or FHD and buffer like hell.

YouTube uses very high compression. Streaming services are the one who uses high bitrates .

Gotta agree with your last paragraph. I don't think we've seen any wide-scale slowdowns, or even capacity issues. Yes, definitely a spike in network usage, but seemingly within limits, from the few stats I've seen of ISPs in Europe.
Besides, isn't that what QoS is meant to automatically take care of at the network level?
So anyone not savvy enough to switch the resolution up (i.e. a majority) is going to end up assuming that the video quality is poor due to everyone being online at home.
Well, the good thing is at least with YouTube one can switch the resolution back up. Quite unlike Netflix in Europe which is cutting back on bitrate.

It's just that now YT defaults at 480p. Those who won't notice the quality difference will just let it there.

Jokes on them, the first thing I always do before watching a YouTube video is to set the resolution in full.
Even if it defaults to 1080p in Auto, I still would manually toggle it to 1080p to prevent it from switching down to lower resolution (as Auto setting does).

Its wrong concept.. u pay for bandwidth, hence its operator bussiness to improve on their side, should not ask netflix and youtube to reduce resolution.. operators should have prepared for more bandwidth , its not like they are providing internet free. If a person pays high should enjoy high quality bcoz they contribute to operator income..how crap this world is instead of improving wants to degrade ...
