Its getting more rediculous, nm lower per year, this year 5nm,then I think 5nm+,then 3nm
With this, our phones can finally be downsized, lesser battery even needed.

Mobile chips are getting more powerful and efficient due to lower nm process, whereas desktop and laptop chips are still stuck at 14 nm. Time for laptops and desktops to also go lower. Also, it would be interesting to see what would come next after this process can no longer be lowered.

I think what they mean by delay is , they were supposed to be working on 3 NM in 2030 but it has been delayed to 2040!

I can't wait for tsmc to release their 3.15pm process!

Anonymous, 07 Apr 2020Wait. A kurzgesagt video said that you can't go beyond 5nm?... moreThe limit to silicon is around 3-5nm, so technically Kurzgesagt is right about our "current" situation. However, when we reach this "limit," chips will just switch to another material other than silicon which can support sub-3nm architectures. So technically there isn't a limit for processing technology to reach yet and even for when we do reach the maximum limit there are still other options. For example, instead on transistors requiring electrical signals, we could switch to photonic chips which although with current technologies will be bigger in size than current silicon-based technologies, it will be able to acheive 20 times greater speed than silicon-based chips (a worthwhile trade-off I'll say). Technology always advances and researchers will find novel ideas to combat current limitations.

Headline quote, "Samsung's 3nm chip production..."

...meanwhile Intel is blissfully happily sitting pumping out 14++nm chips as part of their most current tenth generation CPU lineup.

Intel are a disgrace to themselves and the silicon wafer industry. Shame on them for the stagnation of development for over a decade from the 2006 release of their first generation Core chip. They believed they had a monopoly on chip manufacturing, as they wrongly assumed their nearest competitor, AMD, was decimated.

Everyone in the silicon fab industry has made vast technological advances, whilst Intel's former CEO, Paul Otellini (RIP) was renowned for partaking in promiscuous activity and allegedly boasted about it without his wife's knowledge. His successor, Brian Krzanich, had demons of his own to battle with, having an inappropriate relationship with a fellow colleague, resulting in him being pushed out from Intel.

If the boss is fooling around, not much chance the employees are fairing any better.

Intel are A-list mega-losers – no smartphone chip to speak of. Intel had Medfield (x86 competitor to ARM's dominance in smartphone, but clearly Intel's boss had better things to be indulging).

Intel also had designed its XScale architecture based on the ARMv5TE, which was the successor to the Intel StrongARM chips that was acquired from DEC, but later sold to Marvel (semiconductors, not comics).

Despite all the good hard work Intel had been doing, prior to around 2005, Intel essentially did 'jack', whilst hiking up prices of their chips.

I have no sympathy for Intel at all.

It's Microsoft who have suffered at the hands of Intel's belligerent monopolistic behaviour – Microsoft hadn't been able to release their Surface Foldable™ with a competitive x86-64 CPU. Alas, Microsoft shall now release Surface Neo with Android. :vomit:

Good on you Samsung, great work with 3nm (even if it isn't really 3nm, but rather more comparable to TSMC's 5nm).

six_tymes, 07 Apr 2020don't hold your breath. Don't bother, he's one of those people who will "want" something the moment they find out it's "better" even if it gives him no benefit. They were given 4000mAh and 5000mAh batteries when there were only 3000 and below, and now they want more than that. They were given 512GB when there was only 64GB storage but now that's too low and they "require" 10TB. I'm exaggerating, of course, but when 0.1nm chips eventually come out (if ever), they'll most likely be complaining "why aren't there 0.01nm chips yet smh"

                      Anonymous, 07 Apr 2020 Are we skipping 5nm already?Nope, 5nm EUV is for kirin 1020, A14 bionic, snapdragon 875, exynos 1000? ...

A kurzgesagt video said that you can't go beyond 5nm?... moreOf courae you can, just below 5nm makes manufactoring way more difficult, but for companies like Samsung and TSMC, with billion dollar R&D budgets everything is possible, just a matter of time.

Samsung is a public company. They can't lie to get their stock-price high.
If they caught lying there will be serious consequences like amercement and other punishment.
I'm not saying public companies don't lie.
What I'm saying is they don't lie like a stupid which is easily understandable by common people like us.
Besides Samsung has provided smaller architecture earlier(you can check history) than their rivals in the past.
From my memory I can say Samsung released 20nm SoC while other were using 28nm.
There might be more example like this.
