Kirin 985 chipset benchmarked - faster than the 820, slower than Dimensity 1000

08 April 2020
It's like a Kirin 820 CPU with higher clock speeds. Also, it has a more powerful dual-core NPU.

Speculation of course, but the rumour mill expects Huawei's yet to be announced Kirin 1020 to be built by TSMC on the latest 5nm process using Cortex A78 cores..

With many of the comments, I'm unsure many have done research and have not truly understand why Huawei used A76 cores.

Richard Yu has said previously that A77 cores were considered but an A76@2.86GHz vs an A77@2.86GHz, the A77 is more power hungry when at the same clock speed as an A76.

Theoretically, an A77 should be implemented at a slightly lower clock speed that an outgoing A76 to maintain the same speed but improving efficiency through lower clock speeds.

A76 is obv inferior to a77 in everything, what im talking about is k990 is the best a76 implementation - compared to sd855 etc its more efficient. Forget samsung, did you bother to check the sources i mentioned?

Cortex A76 is obviously inferior to cortex A77 in terms of efficiency and thermal management.
Samsung with the Exynos series on S20 has similar throttling problems coz of the mali GPU.
I remember Morsel(another user on this site) explaining it

How is it that Anandtech's released a comprehensive article about the incredibly clandestine behaviour of Mediatek secretly but heavy-handedly cheating basically all benchmarks on most of their new chipsets, yet it hasn't been mentioned seemingly at all on a popular website about technical phone reviews?
I recall the Dimensity 1000 *might* not have been affected, but it's still a bit disappointing it hasn't been brought up at all.

Like i said, kirin 990 is the most efficient chip with a76 big cores, you can check sustained performance results over on anandtech. That mali gpu is also pretty good for native android gaming. Gamebench has tested it you can check on their site.

They knew that the 990 throttled on the Mate 30 pro especially during intensive gaming.
So to prevent that on their 2020 flagships, they added some cooling which IMO should be standard on flasghip phones.
In fact, it's not so much the CPU, but the paired Mali gpu that is more responsible for throttling.

But I can say why comparing the 985 to high end snapdragon SoCs is fair. It's because the predecessor to the Honor 30 used the Kirin 980, Huawei's highest end chip at the time. So it's only fair to compare it to other high end chips.

Besides, what is the point of comparing 985 to highend Snapdragon SoCs? This will be inside Honor 30 which is an upper midrange tier.

Don't see much sense in 985, when 820 is about as good.
