Insiders: Sony will produce only a limited number of PlayStation 5 consoles at launch

16 April 2020
Not because of the pandemic, but due to the high costs of the console's components (which will push the launch price up).

Peter-B, 16 Apr 2020The gaming industry has been pretending that inflation does... moreNot really true. There are tons of other transactions/purchases once you have a game and want to enjoy it fully. It make a tons of money for developers nowadays. Look at EA sports for example. They could give games away for free and still earn so much money from the game.

Mikele, 16 Apr 2020I do not understand all these price complaints, given that ... morePhone nowadays is something what you would really need compared to console. And one thing you need to understand- making a phone for 400 doesn't mean that it cost for company 400. It cost way more than that. Yes Chinese companies were able to make super cheap phones in the beginning because it was mostly copy paste, but look nowadays - it is not cheap by any meaning anymore.
Also people will not give 1400 for a phone just for couple years anymore. After pandemic will be over we will live in different world for at least 5 years.

Consoles biggest revenue are the games, services, etc. NEVER THE HARDWARE.

A console does not have a display attach to it

A console is not a portable small computer.

A console does not take pictures/videos.

A console is not connected to any cellular networks

So much more, where do you people come up with this stuff?

Peter-B, 16 Apr 2020The gaming industry has been pretending that inflation does... moreActually no, neither the gaming, movie or music industry have been pretending inflation doesn't exist -- they just have more fierce competition than ever, and new business models such as the "freemium" and other subscription based services, so they cannot raise prices for traditional one-off purchases.

Competition is good for everyone, not just gamers.

Sony needs to limit the PS5 sales to 1 (for the first 6 months) console per customer/address to prevent these crooks from price-gouging the hell out of their system.

Micorriza, 16 Apr 2020If you consider inflation, $500 in 2006 would be equivalent... moreThe gaming industry has been pretending that inflation doesn't exist for quite a while now - AAA games have been priced $60 for years. That's good for players, not so good for developers.

Anonymous, 16 Apr 2020Seems like technology is developing slowly and very little ... moreYup average worker salaries are going no where, but the statics are mislead by GDP PER CAPITA since the wealth between the poor and the rich is increasing all the time and will be even worse after COVID-19 Crisis.

World Bank Said Poverty Clock has been Set back by another 30 years.

                    CRUEL WORLD :(

Micorriza, 16 Apr 2020If you consider inflation, $500 in 2006 would be equivalent... moreNot to mention the parts that enter inside the PlayStation. It is only obvious that these parts are more expensive for PS5, than they were for PS4. I think Sony will not make a far better profit on each unit of PS5, compared to a PS4 unit.
If it will cost 500EUR at launch it will not be so bad. I mean, at that price you will certainly not get any gaming PC.

Anonymous, 16 Apr 2020Seems like technology is developing slowly and very little ... moreYou should develop skills and/or change jobs more often for a salary bump. Salaries on the average have been growing for years. It's the lazy people who are scared of a change that get left behind. No one will raise your salary if you don't act.

If you consider inflation, $500 in 2006 would be equivalent to $640 in 2020!
$400 in 2006 would be equiv to $512 in 2020

                          Considering $400 in 2013 is about $443 in 2020.

So, yes, more expensive than PS4, but much cheaper than PS3 in relative terms :)

And they use it for 2 years and one console can be used for 10 years.

Seems like technology is developing slowly and very little but in same time just getting ridiculous expensive. If only salaries would go up so quickly.

I will be 1st in line for this.
