This is so stupid to says Symbian was basic and not smartphone. About 15 years ago, Symbian or Epoch 32 was a very sophisticated pda OS. It stille was when the first pda phones came to market. When iPhone came to market Symbian was still more sophsisticated and it is still so against iOS and on par with Android.
Nokia tries to kill Symbian beacause it is too open and people are too free to use it without paying for its use to Nokia. This is why Nokia wants to go Window Phone which is a closed system like iOS.

nickname, 28 May 2012Why Sony and LG that already had bad reputation on Android,... moreBecause when they used the os, it was not classed as a smartphone then, they used the most basic version of Symbian and sony was still sony ericsson, plus they had their own propriety OS plus technology was rather limited back a few years ago compared to the complexity of today. With Android/Tizen they are adopting a smartphone os where updates are essential to their survival, it is not for Google/Intel or Samsung to tell them they need to update their software but for Sony and LG to do so themselves.

Nokia will be releasing the updates soon, currently still on beta (check more often betalabs), but will be released soon with two Updates. First will be the SR1 and next would be SR1 plus. You need the latest Belle software to have the SR1 and the SR1 plus.
It is officially known that 808 will be running on Carla during the release.

Why Sony and LG that already had bad reputation on Android, not using Symbian back or adopt Meego/Tizen?

Stop using fake copy of Nokia Phones and your problem will be solved, Symbian can't play mp3 from SD (you mean micro SD) LOL this is the biggest joke of this decade stop fooling people and yourself you are not the only one who owned symbian phone there are over 100 million symbian owners (including me) around the world they all should have complained

general comments on phones and OS:
The newfangled touchscreen qwerty keyboards are NOT helping anyone. Get too many typing error. The older multi function phones with physical numeric keypad and T9 were very fast to do text entry from. But my old silly N95-1 symbian had limited T9 directory (another flaw). could not expand. So many problems with Symbian i finally gave up. Evn tho i wanted a fully capable "old" style physical number key phone. No thanks to Nokia/Symbian flaws.

I used have Nokia N95-1 (spent $500 when new) and it COULD NOT PLAY simple MP3 music from SD card!! Keep corrupting card. anyway, being used to symbian, I was just in market for new phone, lo and behold, i checked online boards and their "new" symbian line of phone STILL HAVE SAME memory card corruption problem with Nokia N8 (also expensive phone). It is a joke. I can buy mp3 player from china here in my poor country for Rs 3000. play 8GB mp3 no problem and videos too. What are they doing in Finland? Long story short, I bought a sony LOL!!! Much happier.

Granted BB PlayBook and Web os multitasking are my preference, but it is hard to fault the current versions of Android compared to 1.6 donut! But me, I'm an N900 veteran and I still want a MeeGo like interface experience!

Anonymous, 27 May 2012In Android, if I put some apps in background, I don't reall... moreWhich version of Android are you using. If you are on 4.0 ice cream sandwich, hold down the home button and you get a view of the tasks you are currently running in the background, just swipe across to kill them and when you pull down the drop down menu you will have no active tasks consuming battery, it's really that simple. With Gingerbread you have a standard task manager that comes pre-installed and you just hit the x button to kill all apps which are running its not as intuitive as ice cream sandwich yet it's not as hard as you are making it out to be.

Bill, 27 May 2012Give me some examples without generalizations. Most, if not... moreIn Android, if I put some apps in background, I don't really know what happens: are they closed, and when, and which of them? Are they working or freezing? Are they using my network for receiving or transmitting information? Which information? In Symbian I choose what app to kill and when (control), and all the apps in background are working (multitasking)

Most, if not all the development/xda and apps investment are poured into both IOS and Android (open os like symbian, so called lags and freezes are virtually ironed out on both gingerbread and ics. I love Symbian as much as anyone else but MeeGo should have been the way forward for the higher tier models. Android has it's faults with updates (blame carriers and oems) but the experience is hard to fault and is the most advanced mobile os on the planet. If anything, Symbian/Android are perfect
