Qualcomm, Samsung and Huawei back EVC codec for future 4K and 8K videos

13 May 2020
EVC has a royalty-free version, unlike H.265 and the upcoming H.266.

    If I'm not mistaken.

    Free EVC = H.264 level

    Paid EVC = H.265 level

VVC = H.266 (which from what I have seen on the internet, it outperforms the H.265 and AV1 by up to 35%)

    From what I have understood:

LCRVC = extra paid tool/plugin which improves the base codec by offering better encoding and decoding speeds.

"LCEVC brings a new approach to video compression. It leverages a base video codec (e.g., AVC, HEVC, AV1, EVC and VVC) and employs a highly efficient and low complexity enhancement that adds up to two layers of encoded residuals that correct artefacts produced by the base video codec and add detail and sharpness for the final output video. By doing so, it improves video compression efficiency while maintaining or lowering the overall encoding and decoding complexity."

        > VHS, Betamax
I believe Betamax was used for a long time but only as a professional standard, VHS was for the "ordinary" people ;)

        > XviD, WMV (Windows Media), AVI, MOV (QuickTime), RA (RealMedia), MPEG1, DivX
XviD is a free alternative for DivX, and not a paid competing standard.
Xvid and DivX are codecs, AVI is a container - different things.
MPEG1 was way before both above.
MOV was forced mostly by Apple so not really a competition.

        > USB, IEEE 1394 (FireWire)
This is not the same! FireWire was used to grab digital footage from magnetic casettes. This was never an intention of USB.

        > H.264, H.265
This is not a competition. One is a successor of the other.
Competition is x264 and x265 respectively, but again, they are free of charge, I would back it up.

Having that said, Huawei is pushing their bul***it NM cards when there is a great microSD standard supported by almost everybody.

Rimas2, 14 May 2020AV1 + AVIF ftw. The rest can rest. The status of AV1 as a royalty-free codec is at risk (so is VP9's, but not VP8's which was settled by Google) by a company called Sisvel, and they have even asserted patents against it. EVC has gone through a much stronger patent review. Basically EVC base only uses technologies whose patents have expired or have been committed by their owners under royalty-free terms, instead of trying to find ways around patents. So if it gives almost the same quality as HEVC, why not?

              Really?
              That's a joke?
Qualcomm is often condemned about the way they use SEP!

L... moreAs much as I prefer a single universal ubiquitous standard, the reality is that these companies want to profit from the creation of their products hence competition. It is inevitable. In the case of present video codecs, VP9 is only used for streaming services while everything else is either H264 or H265. Popularity determines the lifespan of the products. JPEG although seriously outdated still lives.

Should we ? Let's take a blast into the past to assess the wisdom of your statement:

                    VHS, Betamax

CD, DCC (Philips Digital Compact Cassette), MD (Sony MiniDisc)

DVD, MMCD (MultiMedia Compact Disc: backed by Philips, Sony), SD (Super Density disc: backed by Toshiba, Matsushita)

Secure Digital (SD), xD (Fujifilm), Memory Stick (Sony)

XviD, WMV (Windows Media), AVI, MOV (QuickTime), RA (RealMedia), MPEG1, DivX

                    SVG, SWF (Macromedia/Adobe Flash)

                    Blu-ray, HD DVD

                    USB, IEEE 1394 (FireWire)

                    H.264, H.265

                    etc...

We as humans ought to learn from historical precedence. Two or more competing standards have typically allowed only one to flourish. So let's huddle around the conference table and back a single codec that shall be the successor to H.264.

I think we should proceed with 2 standards, one space-friendly high technology one, and the other one which is good for compatibility & low processing like H.264.

Otherwise, it has become a mad technology race. People want high-res footage, Full HD is a joke today. But what about old computers, will they be able to play it, leave alone encode it?

We should have 2 major standards.

                        Hmmmm.. Interesting... :)

As it stands, AV1 is better than EVC. AV1 has better quality, comparable compression efficiency, and most importantly, AV1 uses much less computing power for both decoding and encoding. In short term, the best 4K video can be achieved through AV1 and super-high bitrate, with special video-dedicated sensor with high data read-out rate.
