Given the national defense significance, I think the timing needs to be advanced.

Well i really think modern humans relly on technology too much.
And the new phones will be super expensive because chinese worker gets 16 yuans roughly 3 dollars per hour but US workers earning 14 to 22 dollars.

Oh wow up goes iphone prices.

Wow! So many geniuses in the comment section. You people are true visionaries! Here is an idea. All of you should travel to the location of every major company's boardroom and inform the Board of Directors that their services are no longer needed. Create a new BOD, and appoint one of you as Chairperson. Once complete, relieve all of the executive officers of their duties, and replace them with more users right here from GSMArena.

I'm sure that the newly established corporate hierarchy, "GSMArena's Users from the Comments Section", will grow these multi-billion dollar corporations well into the trillions!

It's so obvious now. Why hasn't this been done already? Hmm, let's see. I got it! It's because no one here knows WTF they're talking about 99.9% of the time! Otherwise, they wouldn't be here.

Continue to practice social distancing, and have a great day.

That will increase the prices a lot in USA. Foreign brands will not pay TSMC more money than now for build those facilities and higher salaries, that will all charged to USA customers. They will also probably lose Huawei as a client that will end building their own factories and developing new technology. Huawei should shift to RISC-V architecture and evolve.

you guys apparently doesn't know a thing or two about fab process. full node like 7nm, 16nm, and 28nm are used well over their usage. for example, modular 4G modem are still built using 28nm. even BD player SoC are fabricated on 45nm or 90nm. Why? Because they don't need to use the latest cutting edge technology. in a large scheme of things, it's economically more viable to keep some device on outdated node, because the advancement doesn't justify the cost.

Surely 9 years on, they won't continue with 5nm chips. And it doesn't take 9 years to make a factory. 2 on an average. 5 at tops if there are legal, political or environmental roadblocks. And by then it would be infeasible to continue with that location anyway. Some error from source or from GSMa.

Reading some of what you guys said, if it is true, then this one will be another ( America factory, film is on Netflix). And it wouldn't be a successful one too, which mean no business is going back to America ( cause it won't be profitable or successfully to operate without any problems/ union problem).

Then why are you thinking 9 years ahead? You think there's a 1 - 2 nm factory in TSMC in development right now? You don't want some jobs for the US CITIZENS?

5nm in 2029 is already outdated. TSMC is smart in getting huge tax break moving (by then) outdated machines from mainland/Taiwan to the US while they work on 2nm and 1nm at home. 20000 wafers by month is also nothing as TSMC's 7nm capacity will be 140000 wafer by month by 2nd half of this year.

Smart Chinese take America to the cleaner again.
