MediaTek Dimensity 820 unveiled: higher CPU clock speeds, extra GPU core and dual SIM 5G

18 May 2020
It's the same base hardware as the Dimensity 800, but the four Cortex-A76 cores run at 2.6GHz (up from 2.0GHz). Also, the GPU now has five cores.

Those Kryo cores you speak of are based on ARM Cortex and aren't much different than conventional ARM Cortex. It's just branding. Qualcomm stopped making semi-custom CPU and used Cortex-A77 for the Snapdragon 865 which is the CPU cores used in Dimensity 1000 and Exynos 980. They still named it Kryo because again, branding. Exynos flagship SoCs use Mongoose cores as performance cores NOT CORTEX-A7x and it only got worse on Exynos 9810. Apple is the only one who can actually make a better CPU than everyone else.

digitaldevil, 18 May 2020samsung exynos got them and every1 know how bad exynos is Did u anything about smartphone processors??.I think no its not the problem of a55 cores in exynos the problem is due to inefficient custom mongoose cores and their integration their is no problem with the a55 cores they are just fine.

Tell me why have Nokia mediatek phones getting 2 -3 years OS updates

Who started this chipset doesn't last propaganda

It's not like a battery who's cells die.. so explain how does a non moving part die quickly???

It can't be because of overclocking instability

Because you guys say mediatek dont get source codes or ROMs to mess with Governors

Then what is it? But then Snapdragon SOC doesn't automatically mean custom ROMs because OEM can not unlock bootloader etc

So Snapdragon phones that don't custom ROMs will still last longer because it's qualcomm or just because you say so??

OwO Fortnite is a game for children, besides if you really want to enjot smooth gaming experience for Fortnite, you will be better off buying a decent gaming laptop. No need for GTX GPU, a MX150 should fare well with Fortnite. Fortnite in Android is just very buggy and laggy for some reason.

This and the Kirin 820 will become the norm for $250-300 phones.
Dual 5G, 120Hz support, fast CPU and GPU.
Most of these in 3-4 months will come with OLED displays too.
Again, if you are not into cameras all that much, you won't have to buy another phone for the next 2 years or so. Good stuff!

This midrange chip will probably show up on USD $300 devices.
Yet, it looks like it could outcompete against a USD $1,200 Samsung Galaxy Note 20, with its lacklustre Exynos 990 chipset. Maybe not on CPU or GPU, but probably on sustained performance (ie throttling) due to the enormous heat and battery drain on the recent Exynos chipsets.

It's refreshing to see these "midrange" SoC's finally surpass the performance of the old flasgship chipsets like the QSD 835 and QSD 845. Heck, it's almost as powerful as the old Kirin 980! Though the QSD 855 and QSD 865 are still top-tier for now in the Android Ecosystem. This competition with Qualcomm is much welcomed.... as long as MediaTek stops the benchmark cheating (recently caught), and they start following GPL requirements, and being more community friendly to developers.

Good. A76 core is still goddamn strong. It just need more optimization in software and with 7nm process I hope it will be efficient too. Now release this in lots of phone and Mediatek could see a lot of sales despite of how rare 5G network is. People like shiny new things after all. If they could buy a cheap 5G phone at the same price as 4G phone, they definitely will choose the former.
