Android 11 will label sub-6GHz networks "5G", mmWave will be "5G+", but "5Ge" is still LTE

21 May 2020
People were quite unhappy when AT&T phones started showing "5G E" for LTE Advanced networks a couple of years ago.

This getting very complicated.
Soon we will have to switch the networks everytime we visist different country on holidays or when we swap one carrier for another.
Clumsy idea but thise rich people from rich companies such as AT-T going for it.

Spanky, 21 May 2020Their naming scheme is ridiculous. Why label something as 5... moreBlame AT&T; they did it in the 4G era, and they're doing it again in the 5G era.

It's like all these greedy people suddenly realized how they can tank money on network technology too. All of 'em, from the chips manufacturer, SIM companies to even the OS itself now have to keep their taste aside.

Long live 4G, you didn't have to go through these things.

        I don't care about 5g honestly

Their naming scheme is ridiculous. Why label something as 5G, when it's actually 4G on steroids? Isn't that false advertising/misleading/misinformation? I hope that they change this.

Also, 5G is needed. Not just because of higher speeds, but lower latency (extremely important is some cases). However, mmWave is quite useless, in my opinion, because of the extreme susceptibility to interference. They should have just focused on perfecting the lower bands.

finch, 21 May 2020I agree with you, it is harmful, but only to the flat earth... moreHahahaha. Now, that's funny. LMFAO.

At least 3 new 5G SoCs (with integrated 5G modem) will be forthcoming in the coming weeks. We should see a full price segment coverage of 5G smartphones starting from $150, well before the end of 2020. I will not be surprised if a $100 5G smartphone showing up towards the end of the year.

2020 will be remembered as the year UNO of the real 5G transition when 5G phones start to outsell 4G phones in some critical markets. For Xiaomi and many other phone-makers, the single most important focus is to secure a large enough piece of "the 5G market pie" so that they are better positioned to fight a long and protracted war in the 5G space starting in 2021. (By the way, selling 5G phones to 4G markets doesn't count.)

Kek, 21 May 2020This, so much. I dont know why some people lose their minds... moreExactly, some 5G antenna even caught fire (I don't talk about people burning them) because of how much heat they output, testers were basically unimpressed, and anyway, how and why would anyone require more than 100Mbps on their smartphones ?
That's literally the speed limit of a HDD, isn't that enough ?
If it is for using the phone as a router or tethering, better put priority on deploying the FTTH to get the 1Gbps for everyone and optional 10Gbps for those who need it...

Anonymous, 21 May 2020Agree. With that kind of speed and the limitation 5G impose... moreMy 1Gbps FTTH network is more than enough for me, even for more speed I will certainly not want to switch it for 5G or any other wireless system, not only for privacy and security as they aren't the best usually (they prefer focusing on profits than on that) but also because of how 5G with mmWave have poor object penetration and can be easily degraded by rain alone...

Just, improve 4G coverage enough so that everyone have like 50 to 100Mbps average speed on crowded area, the only advantage of 5G over 4G on the same frequencies is that 5G use newer protocoles that allow it to handle more clients at once, hence why 5G data will usually be unlimited, but just upgrading 4G would do, there is no need to go up to mmWave frequencies and require new modem on Smartphones...

Anonymous, 21 May 2020True. Here we do not have 5G yet, but before thinking o... moreNot in France, my city have like 50k habitants, and my 4G can climb at 170Mb/s, though I live like at 200m away from the antenna...
But even throughout the city I still get really nice coverage, but there are still area where it isn't that good, and I think having one antenna per mobile carrier rather than a common one is a really stupid idea as you can be in an area where an antenna give you an excellent coverage, but because "It AiN't YoUr cArRiEr aNtEnNa" you get crap coverage cause its own antenna is further away...
Also, not only FTTH should be a priority over 4G, but if you don't improve the optical fiber networks that goes to the 5G antenna, it is useless to deploy 5G anyway...

                              5GE forget it.

When 4G began 70-100mbps was possible due to few subscribers. Now at peak hours 4-7mbps download, upload at 0.1mbps!!!!

Don't forget about qouta on your data package. 30 Gigabyte a month costs a bomb and it's not enough. How many gigabytes will 5G package have? And it's cost?

It will promise a lot of stuff 4G promised, but in the end, the implementation will be really poor and not even fulfill the expectations.

Very bad naming convention, since 5Ge, 5G, 5G+ are not standard usages. Better to use simpler names, such as 5G(sub6), 5G(mmW), etc.

With that kind of speed and the limitation 5G impose I think it's better to use 5G as replacement for cable going to the home instead of putting in the device which will only causing the price to jump & throw the battery life out of the window. 4G still works for mobile devices.

Here we do not have 5G yet, but before thinking of providing 5G the telecons should fix the 4G issues. If your city has over 900.000 citizens, you may have a 50-70Mbps 4G, but if your city has about 200.000 or less you will be luck to use at 10-12Mbps.

The 3G is even worse scenario. It is ridiculous when you are in downtown and you mobile connection is weak and slow at point you can barely open a website.
