AnonD-909757, 21 May 2020Nope, at worse they can interfere a little with the antenna... moreThanks, it's pretty clear now ;)

KondriX, 21 May 2020Hi there! Maybe it's a stupid question, but wasn't magnets... moreNope, at worse they can interfere a little with the antennas of the phone and get you a little less signal, but that's it...

                  Long answer :
CRT monitors worked in a way where magnets were an essential part of the working.
Basically those monitors were shooting 3 electron beams using cathode and anode methods, then, electrons being influenced by magnetic fields, two electromagnets were used, one for moving the beam up down and left right, so basically the point that was constantly moving across the display was steered through electromagnetic field, if you put a magnet close enough, well, you simply reorient those electrons, making the TV displaying weird stuff.
But LCD and Oled display doesn't get the same negative effects from magnets as pixels are individuals vs CRT who have a single beam scanning the whole surface.
Which is why CRT were long, because you needed enough space for the beam to be bent without using incredibly high amount of power.

No components will really be damaged by magnets in your phone, except if you use EXTREMELY powerful ones...

Edit: anyway LG already did it on the LG V60 and there are multiple magnetic cable and adapter available for phone who don't cause any issue.
There are also magnetic phone holders for cars who also don't cause issues.

Maybe it's a stupid question, but wasn't magnets creating problems for displays? I know it was a problem with CRT monitors, not sure with modern displays, I didn't try :D

YUKI93, 21 May 2020Yes, I definitely don't want portless phone. Wireless file ... moreExactly, that's why I talk about magnetic ports, they have all the advantages of a portless device :
                      *Waterproof/resistant.
                      *No space taken inside...

And none of the disadvantages of the ports :
                      *Nothing to get clogged in.
*No issue with sand or dust as a simple wipe will clean it.
*Can't be bent damaged as the magnet will simply go away.
*Inside direct connections rather than the whole port allow for more precise and easier manufacturing.

All the advantages as you can keep connect USB and Jack, the inconvenient is that, you have to carry adapters with you, but that's also an advantage as you can have multiple adapters depending on your needs (USB-C, Micro USB, Jack 3.5mm) so you don't get on a friend house who only have a USB-C or Micro USB or even lightning and can't do anything about it, here you can easily adapt to any interface.

And it won't cost much, the device part is really simple, just a contractors, and the adapters (whose have the magnet) won't be more expensive than a USB-C Lightning adapter (10¤), and you won't need Lightning to USB-C, then USB-C to Lightning etc etc, all phones following one standard would allow for a much better experience !

AnonD-909757, 21 May 2020Sound good, in theory... But in reality the only purpose i... moreYes, I definitely don't want portless phone. Wireless file transfer and wireless audio is a big NO-NO for me! I have way a lot of terribly bad experiences with them and I definitely don't want to embrace them again... EVER! You can call me a boomer if you like (not that I am one since I'm 27), but I definitely prefer convenience and ease of mind all the way.

Whackcar, 21 May 2020Wifi file transfer is not a new thing. We've been doing it ... moreExactly, it's nothing new.
Plenty of third party apps providing this.
Most third party apps already give you stock like integration available in all menus with better encryption than Google can provide.

Can you call or send messages using that?

Wifi file transfer is not a new thing. We've been doing it since over 7-8 years with the help of third party apps like Xender & MiDrop. This feature should've been baked into stock Android though. Would've been far more convenient for basic users.

                                Sound good, in theory...
But in reality the only purpose is to remove the USB port...
C'mon, I know physical ports cause issues, but is it too hard to make magnetic flat ports ?
Many small brands did it through magnetic usb adapters and LG did it with the LG V60 :
                                https://www.gsmarena.com/lg_v60_thinq_5g-review-2101p3.php
Which BTW I often said would be a great idea to make such a thing for both USB and Jack port as if done well you get all advantages of both port and portless devices while keeping the USB compatibility, with 2 adapters you get USB-C and Micro USB compatibility, you can even get Lightning and regular USB compatibility, same for Jack you can get compatibility with all sizes.

Considering I did advise a company that made such USB adapters (Sikai Cases) in end 2019 (before the V60 release) to work with a smartphone company to make a portless phone concept, I wouldn't be surprised if I had an influence on the V60 portless design...

So why aren't we seeing more portless phones with magnetic USB and Jack "ports" ?
I don't think anyone would like to have 100% portless phones without any USB capabilities...
