Weekly poll: How much will you spend on your next phone?

24 May 2020
There are phones under $200 that work well enough, but the best experience is often locked up behind a $1,000+ price tag.

Sort by:

Phones are way to overpriced for the tech which is basically an update over the previous year's phone.

These phone makers are just money grabbers but their bubble is gonna burst and their houses will come crumbling down eventually.

Some poor bastards that were working in Carrefour as cashiers had S8+'s. Probably thought they were so cool. For me, they looked pathetic. I knew that their monthly salaries were half than what the phone cost. And most likely the phone was bought in installments of 24 months. But, in their heads, the image mattered more. Lame.
No wonder 3 years ago I ditched the country.
Common sense and logic should tell you never to buy things that you can't afford to pay straight away (not including here cars or houses). Tell that to the Balkan people..yeah right.

I feel what he is saying just because i can see this. In the Balkans area there is a mentality of showing off. People tend to spend much more on the things other people can see like phones and cars, giving the impression that they are doing better than they actually are.
I worked in retail and sold phones. And i could see this first hand, people getting a credit 2 to 5 yeas on a top phone with they couldn't afford.

I don't intend to spend $1000 on a phone myself, but I can see why certain people choose to buy it. I used to spend that amount, when I need certain features. You're just jealous of others.

I chose range price $200 - $400. For me, I don't need to spend more than $400. For what purpose spending up to $1.000 just for a smartphone? 5G connectivity here is not available. To become wellknow or rich looks alike? I would better spend for trading business.

Well the answer is very simple.
All phones of all rice ranges touch phones or button ones share one common this which is basic for all cell phones since first motorola ever made back in may 1972 presented by Martin Cooper Coo founder of Motorola and his team.
And that same single thig is GSM Service thus Calling to people from palces where we have Network signal and sending messages.
Anything else is like to say Add-on but for the most common thigs 10 eur phone for 1000+ eur phones are equally same because all of them can send messages and dial people others phones.

In my case 400 eur is my roof where buying anything more expensive is just money thrown to toilet because for up to 400 bucks a decent flagship can be bought which have enough storage, great battery capacity, great CPU and GPU enough ram and storage and does decent photos.
Anything like brand name is just garbage or advertising. In present eras most brands are equally same in quality and most users will swap their device every 2-3 years.
So having a 200 or 400 or 1000 eur phone which will gets old or too old in 2-3 maybe 4 years and swap it for new device is typical for many users and thus anything much more epensive just loose much more value over time and thus it will not be great thing to buy and then sell.
My current phone is Moto X4 which ciost me 395 euros first day when it was available here in Slovakia and still works and looks like a brand new device. Have 88% on accubattery app and i am heavy gamer. It runs litterary everythig smoothly and never had any major problems with my phone with pure android experience without any stupid add on such as ONE UI etc.
Thus to my honest experience and recommendations.

Many years I am only dealing with flagshios after my fiasco with my first Android phone Xperia Play. And I am not regreting, as flagship can last you quite a while, but prices of those flagships these days are ridicolous. Sticking to lets say default galaxy S flagships series phones, as I did for many years, becomes very pricey and I am sticking to number variants with no top of the line plus or ultra ones. Looks like this time I will hold on my phone longer or will have to switch to chinese cheaper flagship brands, cause I will not going to waste north of 1000 dollars for flagships, which is definitely not worth it, as S20 Ultra proved for many of its owners.

Google and One Plus is pretty much the same scenario, 3 models per year. Maybe 5 models in recent years.
But Samsung is releasing 10 models per year (at least), because they target every category of people. Imagine what man power and costs will need to update 50 models to the latest software.
The same goes with Xiaomi or Huawei.
I am not trying to excuse companies like Samsung or Xiaomi, but you need to see the bigger picture here.
For me, I understand why this companies are releasing software updates only for 2 years. Which, by the way is not that bad. I mean, changing smartphones once per 2 years is ok. I change them once per year in average, for example.

In early day's there is major performance difference between high & low price phone but currently there is no major performance difference in phone so why all spend that much money I don't know (only for show off their money) otherwise normal selfy people are happy with their oppo & vivo phones and others are happy with Xiaomi or realme. I have Mi A2 I buy it in sale and also in exchange with my old phone for only Rs. 5,600.00 and I am happy with it (I can also buy Rs.50,000 phone anytime & I use many Costly phone earlier but now I understand after 1.5 or 2 year I just bore and buy new phone) so I don't waste my money because I thought it is useless to buy costly phone just to use instagram, whatsapp, and youtube & yes you can call or sms on any Rs. 1500.00 Phone.

It is made out to be way more dramatic of a dire issue than it needs to be. But they are important. But many androids get at least an extra year of security updates after its two years of updates. Yes they should do better. But that alone does not disqualify android. Or negate the negative effects of ios devices or even their buggy updates.
