24 May 2020
There are phones under $200 that work well enough, but the best experience is often locked up behind a $1,000+ price tag.

Anonymous, 24 May 2020That's the k30 pro zoom edition 500$ SD 865 telephoto ois i... moreYeah, thanks for the info, but I want at least 3D facial recognition (dot projector + IR, not IR alone) or the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max (or equivalent when they will exist), if possible both.
Otherwise I would have bought the OnePlus 7 Pro if pop up alone was what I looked for as this phone is quite good.
Sadly except the Oppo Find X there is no pop up + 3D facial recognition phones, and this phone isn't really a pop up but an hybrid slider/pop up which aren't as good.
But still I won't buy (unless my phone die and I need a new one for cheap as replacement) any phone without pop and 3D facial recognition and/or 3D Sonic Max.

Also since I live in France, I would need to buy the Poco F2 Pro as out of the 4G frequencies B1, B3, B7, B20 and B28 in France, only the B1, B3 and B7 are covered by the K30 Pro.

But I think phones like that will inevitably come anyway...

*The Galaxy Note20, if Samsung doesn't fail, will have the 3D Sonic Max which will wash out the poor reputation of its predecessor the 3D Sonic, and prove how great those ultrasonic underdisplay and large area fingerprint scanner are.

*The iPhone 2020 is apparently planning on putting both FaceID and TouchID (underdisplay, maybe ultrasonic) and will finally make peoples understand that one Biometric isn't made to replace the other but both are great when they work together and exponentially more secure than each one separately.

*The initial hate of pop up is wearing down as the arguments are now know to be totally irrelevant, the pop up have proven its quality and reliability, peoples hate more and more punch hole and notches, underdisplay camera will be heck of expensive and probably a big disappointment and they may not come anytime soon (though I suspect the first one to come this year without a convincing result), more and more peoples want fulldisplay and privacy threat is growing and more and more peoples become aware of that...
So Pop up might, hopefully gain more popularity offering more diversity, and I'd say that the Honor X10 with his reinforced pop up (only required because yet too many peoples still fear that the pop up isn't durable enough) will lead the way of a new generation of improved pop up mechanisms, I hope electric motor will be replaced by electromagnets so there is virtually no wear and it will be totally waterproof without added cost, which will help peoples liking it !

Sadly it will take some time, before all those puzzle pieces are put into places...

Up to $1000, that's what I can afford at the moment. Maybe in the future more than that, if I think the device worth it.

Apple will go all OLED this year so even that will dry up for you in the future. I'm not sure if DC dimming will help you or not, personally I don't get any problems and don't adjust or use automatic brightness. I don't see a world where any decent compact phones will be using LCDs in 2021. You'll be stuck with old or budget phones.

Probably not over $250. Last phone costed around $500 and one before that $120. Not really much difference besides screen resolution and camera.
Not gonna overspend again, not worth it. $100 in computer makes much more difference and phones are just useless for alot of stuff

I was going to buy the xperia 1 mk2, ended up growing tired of the delays and bought the s20 ultra
I expected the 100x zoom to be trash, and it kind of is, it's just clever algorithms, but honestly it's far better than people give it credit for, same for other zoom levels, all things considered
I was able to zoom in on objects very far away and the algoritm made out details that I was only able to see through binoculars
obviously the picture comes out pretty blurry and sometimes the crop algorithm makes a mistake and shifts the image but what do you expect from a paper thin pocket device
i only used low/mid end phones before so this is a huge leap in performance for me, don't regret it one bit, everything runs so well

Can't decide since I'm looking at the specs and camera performance first, only then I will look at the price.

As a general rule I won't spend over $400 on a phone. The last flagship I bought was a Nexus 6. The flagship experience vs a $400 phone isn't justified by the price. Only the most extreme gamers will even notice a significant difference. Good build quality and nice cameras can be found on mid-range phones if you shop around.

Screen size isn't everything, it's mainly about the width. Sony still has some small ones too. The screens are "bigger" because the bezels have shrunk but the widths are still small. iPhone SE is good for size too.
