The problme isnt the arm licenses, is the technology to built the SoCs that is of usa. Bad for huawei and honor, even mediatek if usa sancttionated them by selling SoC to huawei.

It's one thing to impose the rule on new transactions but to have it imposed retroactively would mean breach of contracts. It's akin to Google saying you can no longer use your Pixel 3 (or else), instead of refusing to sell you a Pixel 4.

A thing just came in my mind i may be wrong but mediatek qualcom exynos they all use ARM's technology and ARM is a US based brand so i mean US can force mediatek to use arm's cores in their processors isn't it???

Anonymous, 23 May 2020Mediateck is using tsmc tooWith US' new export rule, companies are blocked from producing parts for Huawei and its subsidiaries as long as they use machinery made in US, which means technically it's nothing to do with whatever the business happening between Mediatek and Huawei nor TSMC and Mediatek (unless US decides to adjust the rule after hearing this news). It's not like Huawei is directly asking TSMC to produce THEIR chips, after all.

If I get it correctly, there has been no official statement from TSMC regarding the latest Huawei situation beyond "we're doing a review". More knowledgeable users please enlighten, what exactly is the "licensed US tech" that they are using? It seems that TSMC is years ahead of Intel in terms of fab tech.
PS: I think this announcement regarding Mediatek has nothing to do with the export rule. Mediatek (as are Hisilicon, Unisoc, Qualcomm, Apple) is fabless after all, everything is made by TSMC.

It makes sense, first of all MT SoCs are nowadays so good that you most likely won't notice any difference in performance even when performing CPU intensive tasks between their chips and SD/Exynos. And even though thier GPU is currently a half generation behind of SD, this shouldn't pose a huge problem for Huawei since the same can be said for Kirin for the last few generations and their focus never have been graphics performance. Finally Huawei has been using their chips for lower midrangers and so far hasn't faced any issues with it, so there is nothing that holds them back from deepen their relationship with MT (apart from *possible* political pressures from US and Taiwanese govt. of course).

Sammy's fabs utilizes USs tech too.US is trying to prevent HiSilicon, a company in their entity list, from doing business with TSMC but it's unlikely they can do anything against Taiwanese Mediatek as long as they don't use US-based parts to design the chip in the first place. They probably wouldn't even have considered using it if they didn't know about the situation they are under more than you do.
