Spanky, 29 May 2020Well, the way I see it, there are options available on the ... moreThat's a nice answer you wrote here !

Sadly we don't have a real diversity, most phone are just like the others with very little differences and almost no phone with different features...

For example, I want a phone with pop up, like the one in the Vivo V17 Pro, but with 3D Facial Recognition sensor, and a FPS like the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max...

    1) But this type of pop up is rare as most have either a small one for a single camera, or the whole top part moving up, which isn't really a pop up but a pop up/slider hybrid design.
    2) Almost no Android phones have 3D Facial Recognition, and even in those who have it, some have simplified version...
3)And the 3D Sonic Max is yet to be seen on any phone and MAYBE the Samsung Galaxy Note20 will have it...

And those are just the main features I want, I have tons of smaller preferences that would make an impossible combinaison to find...

The thing is, smartphones for a while were becoming bigger and bigger, which a lot of person dislike/hate, so the batteries capacity just increased as a logical result, but now smartphone have reached their "stable" size causing them to become slightly thicker to compensate for answering the demand of increasing battery capacity.

Meaning that if we just keep making them thinner, battery capacity and many other things will suffer from that, of course I too am for diversity, I would like both thinner and thicker phones, the issue is that the trend always was toward thinner phones, even with the temporary thickness increase.

The good new for you is that solid state battery with way more capacity will soon appear and will enable thinner phones as the battery will be thinner for the same capacity or even more.
    ________________

Well, old phone could have 3,5mm jack as they had way less internal components, look at how even the triple/quad camera setup take space on modern smartphones, now with more complex system, more protocols and chips based features, smartphone really suffer a lack of internal space, look at the Redmi K30 Pro and how they innovated a lot to get more internal space available !

Also the industry want to move toward portless devices for multiple reasons, a good solution would be magnetic ports, but magnetic ports can't work if the phone is too thin...
    ________________

We can't just make thinner or smaller camera module, we actually need the opposite.
To explain simply, the two main difference between DSLR and smartphone camera are the size and the AI "post"(self) processing and retouching.

*DSLR have sensors large enough to gather pictures with a lot of details and precision, including really nice night collection ability, but those pictures are RAW and basically that's what pro will take and then do retouching to obtain the desired result.

*Smartphones have smaller sensors that can't get that good RAW quality, but they have tons of software based retouching to both compensate for the small sensor size and extrapolate data to numerically improve the quality, but also, since Smartphone user just want pictures they take and are ready, as most regular users don't even know name of software to do retouching (other than maybe Photoshop), the phone already do a retouching that try to match what most people would want.

The important informations here is the difference in RAW quality because of the size and why despite being smaller we still get "good" pictures.
For example, there is no real focus on smartphone, most is done through software, which is why the edge of the haircut is sometime blurred as it wasn't perfectly detected as being "closer" than the artificially out of focus background.

And the reason why MP count is getting higher and higher is because the AI can do a better job by having multiple data sources, so multiple pixels are combined into a single one as if it was from multiple sensors, ironically it also cause for the same size (or slightly bigger) sensor to have smaller pixels, which by surface gather less photons, meaning it is less effective at low light and details, the higher resolution thanks to AI who are extremely good at at completing incomplete datas is the only thing that gave those sensors with lots of sensors a justification to exist over a simple large 12MP sensor.

And that is only about sensors, not about the lens which also need space, which is why periscope style telephoto camera were created, they trade thickness to volume occupied.
    ________________

5mm phone would be really expensive, we don't just have the tech to make one, not a prototype but one for mass production.

But eventually we will get to that, I just hope the industry won't just make ONLY those phone, which is what seriously risk to happen, at 5mm there are many things that can't be implemented, side fingerprint scanner would be too thin to gather sufficient data, NFC and Wireless charging receiver now are big space waster on a 5mm phone, 3.5mm jack is now literally over two as thick as the phone, and that not even considering the port size...

Graphene display may be really thin and make your desires dreams come true.

Meanwhile, on sub 8mm phones, there are, by older and thicker to newer to thinner :
    (Based on GSM Arena data)

    At 7.9 mm :
    LG G7 ThinkQ (June 2018)
    Samsung Galaxy J6+ (October 2018)

    At 7.8mm :
    Essential PH-1 (August 2017)
    Honor 8X (September 2018)
    Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+ (March 2019)

    At 7.7mm :
    Samsung Galaxy A50 (March 2019)

    Honorable mentions :
Samsung Galaxy Alpha at 6.7mm (September 2014)
Sony Xperia Z Ultra at 6.5mm (July 2013)

AnonD-909757, 28 May 2020Maybe I do¿ I have an issue with smartphone on my p... moreWell, the way I see it, there are options available on the market to keep everyone happy. The more diversity in offers, the better. I overreacted with the „thick phone lovers need to stop“ part, my bad.

I hope that you will find a model to suit your needs and be happy with it. Batteries are getting bigger, that's the general trend, so I'm sure that you will not be dissapointed. On the flip side, I've been looking for a ~8 mm phone and it's increasingly harder to find one, that's my concern. Thankfully, I've been able to spot a good 2020 model, which fits my general needs and has only 7,9 mm.

About the 3,5mm jack, I don't think space is an issue, sice pretty much all smartphones had it, even when they were tiny (~4 inch screens). It's the same marketing strategy as the microSD card slot removal (they could have kept it on the second SIM slot, if they needed to save space): they want people to buy wireless earbuds and expensive phones (with bigger internal memory).

I agree on the camera hump, but I'd rather have the hump than making the entire phone the same thickness as it. I think that they should try to figure out ways of making the sensors more compact, instead of just bloating the MP count until the sensors get to ridiculous sizes.

Anyway, I'd like to see sub-5mm phones make a debut, but the current trend seems to have reversed.

      Cheers!

Spanky, 28 May 2020Let me ask you this: do you carry your remote control in yo... moreMaybe I do¿
I have an issue with smartphone on my pocket, and it isn't about how thick it is, but how big in general, or more precisely how stupid small pockets (mainly on my pants) are, maybe rather than making phone thinner we should make pockets larger ?
Seriously do you really mean that a 1,5cm phone would be that bad ?
I am sure no one would notice the difference.

And considering that ALL phones are stupid thin despite causing having less batterie, super crowded internal, difficulty of heat dissipation, missing features because of the lack of space, camera bump and other drawback, why would US who want thicker phone and don't have any available good thick phone should keep quiet ?
I think you didn't understood how it work, the oppressed are the one whose voice need to be heard, not the oppressors.

No one here is talking about a 5cm phone with 50Ah of batteries, we are talking about half an inch and 6Ah to 7Ah, that's the issue with people like you obsessed by stupidly thin phones, you imagina that when someone say the phone is too thick, it necessarily mean the guy mean he want a phone a Gigaparsec large...

The issue is actually the opposite, the phone are thinner and thinner, we already lost headphone Jack in most because of stupidities like that, camera bump will soon be as thick as the phone because of how thin they will be, battery barely grow, soon USB port will also get removed for the same reasons : lack of internal space.
If it was only about batterie size, ok, it would be fine, but here we are talking about a paper sheet thin feature like wireless charging being considered as "space waster" by some, do you even realize how stupid it got ?
Most people's wallet are larger than their phone while they only have for goal to carry thin papers...

Also the thinner, the easier to bend it is, and BTW no one told you to put your phone in your pocket, you can buy a man purse.

Ok, and you still complain about the thickness ?
There are tons of peoples buying thick armored cases and none complained about the extra size in their pocket, so maybe the problem come from you ?

AnonD-909757, 28 May 2020Why ? It is just 1mm thicker than other phones, is is THAT... moreLet me ask you this: do you carry your remote control in your pocket all day long?

It is thick phone lovers who should stop going on about phones getting like bricks again. If you want a big battery so much and want thick devices, just get a 20000 mAh power bank and scotch tape it to the back of your phone. Problem solved. You can even scotch tape 2 or 3 power banks, so you don't have to recharge for weeks. You might need a backpack to carry it, but hey!

And it's not as easy as saying „just 1 mm thicker than other phones“. Sure 1 mm today, another 1 mm tomorrow, until we all have to carry phones in briefcases, because of their size.

Also, I haven't used phone covers since 2003.

It is just 1mm thicker than other phones, is is THAT dramatic ?
Smartphones should actually be thicker so we can put more batteries and features, 1.5cm would be a nice thickness for a smartphone.

The same way the obsession over no bezels created monsters like this with a big chin and a notch, thin phone obsession cause many harms too.

Even a 3cm phone would still be comfortable in the hand and cause no drawbacks, so please stop with ultra thin phones which will anyway have an ugly and problematic camera bump and for putting a case over it which increase its thickness anyway...

TV remote control (mainly for what they do) are far from thin, yet have you ever once complained about how thick it is or felt like it was too big ?

It's funny how Samsung can use Snapdragon SoCs for entry-level phones, while flagships are stuck with Exynos. I'm not comparing this to a flagship, just the general idea.

But DAMN! Being almost 1 cm thick is a sad thing.
