Samsung’s latest Exynos 850 chipset might be the most power-efficient of 2020
Article by Hadlee Simons
The Exynos 850 chipset could be super efficient compared to other budget chips.
Samsung has quietly revealed more details about its Exynos 850 chipset.
The processor is built on an 8nm design and features eight Cortex-A55 CPU cores.
These design choices mean it could be the most power-efficient SoC of 2020.
Samsung announced the Galaxy A21s last month, packing a big battery and quad rear cameras for ~$180. But the phone also serves up an Exynos 850 processor, and the brand has now listed the chipset on its website.
The Exynos 850 listing (spotted by SamMobile) reveals that we’re looking at quite possibly the most power-efficient processor of 2020. For one, the SoC is built on an 8nm manufacturing process.
Now, 7nm and 8nm designs have been seen before, as Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Huawei all have flagship and upper-mid range 7nm processors. But this marks the first time we see an 8nm chipset in the budget space, with the Exynos 850 landing in sub-$200 devices.
What else does the Exynos 850 offer?
Furthermore, Samsung’s new SoC also packs an octacore CPU featuring lightweight Cortex-A55 cores only (clocked at 2Ghz). This marks the first time we see an octacore Cortex-A55 CPU from a globally relevant chipmaker.
The combination of an 8nm design and Cortex-A55 CPU cores only means we can therefore expect the Exynos 850 to be the most power-efficient processor of 2020 in theory. So a phone with this SoC might not need the biggest battery to offer long endurance and plenty of screen-on time. But the Galaxy A21s is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery, which means two or three day battery life could be within reach.
Other noteworthy specs include a Mali-G52 GPU, FHD+ display support, 1080p/60fps video recording, eMMC 5.1 support, and Wi-Fi 5/Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. The Exynos 850 also supports dual 16MP/5MP cameras, and 21.7MP single shooters on the front or rear. But it’s worth noting that the Galaxy A21s has a 48MP main camera anyway.
In any event, we’re looking forward to seeing more low-end phones with this processor. Sure, it lacks power on paper and you won’t want it if you play games, but it definitely seems like a successor of sorts to 2016’s similarly frugal Snapdragon 625.

Ashad, 03 Jun 2020hey GSMArena team can you name its equivalent snapdragon pr... moreThere is none... No other company has 8 cortex a55 cores on 8nm PROCESS... we will see super super excellent battery timings from 4000 to 5000mAh batteries...i mean around 3-5 days of above normal usage depending on screen resolution, screen type(Lcd, amoled) etc.
On the other side slim mobile with small display 6inch and below and having around 3000-3500mAh battery will enjoy good battery life as well

Alpha18, 12 Jun 2020Maybe it is on par, if not better, than the new Snapdragon 460.Sd 460 is more powerful as it is built on 11nm process and has 4 cortex A73 and 4 a53 cores... But exynos 850 is way more power efficient / energy saving with reasonable performance as it comprises 8nm process having 8 cortex A55 cores

Hmm~, it's direct ARM cores class equivalent successor to my octa-core Cortex-A53 & Mali-T860. At least it's better than mine. An interesting processor from Samsung☺.

Wow! So another power efficient cores coming up! Nice! Not all folks are power hungry gamer geeks (720p is totally fine!). There are people who hate looking for a wall socket every now and then, and not to mention batt-charge-cycle. Were talkin about budget category here so don't bother mentioning those "ultra" fast charging features.

KondriX, 02 Jun 2020Oh c'mon, 5G right now is a gimmick, even 4G is not working... moreThe problem is samsung is asking for midrange prices for entry level phone he compared the price and processor with dimensity 800 not because of 5g but beacuse of the power the power of dimesity is huge in comparison to that exynos 850 in the same price price or slightly high price in case of dimensity

desparate for more profit ... cant help themselves ... how many lay-offs to make the way for such "powerful" pricey processors that the advertisements will pacify markets that doesnt have choices ... except for other brands with cheaper and more features phones

Phones with 14nm like the Moto G8 power is outy performing the 10nm 9611
You might say these are 720 displays.. but they are LCD so they have 30% more.subpixels and is close to 880p pentile amoled ( 1080p oled is actually 880p resolution)
Losing to even the ulefone armour 7 on 12nm (1080p resolution)
Number 1 is the realme 6i.. on 12nm by a huge margin
If I compare the galaxy A50 to other 4000mah phones art 1080p it gets even worse

Anonymous, 02 Jun 2020Here you can see realme 5 beating m30s in batteryEfficiency is a important thing but just see the performance of those midrange samsung chips the 9611 is not as fast as sd675 and those 720g and 730g are far apart.Samsung should atleast make a processor that can atleast compete againt 720g in midrange

So its mentioned that its a low level chip but again its samsung. The helio G70 is much better so if this piece of this crap exynos 850 whics is slower than G70(Maybe its more efficient than G70) must have low price but wait wait its samsung u will never know.Just one more thing why this midrange chips from samsung are so shit the 9611 and 850 doesn't have any big cores wow and like everytime the price of the having 850 will be more than the price of phones having g70
