Flashback: (Sony) Ericsson T68 and the add-on camera that made it famous

07 June 2020
"Camera phone" was still a fairly new concept back in the early 2000s. And so were color screens on phones, MMS messages too.

Bought it at the time, used it for a couple of weeks and found that the main reason to get it, the camera, was not all that good, so I returned it and went back to my Ericsson T28W, which had far superior reception and cool factor!

I ended up with a 3rd version of T68. I had a T68m...the case of the T68 original but with the internals of the T68i and I'm sure its had some other change too.

Carol, 07 Jun 2020Youp, there was a time when mobile phones were not a copy p... moreFirst of all, it was a lot easier to "differentiate" yourself in an era when screens were 3 lines of text and the phone was dominated by physical buttons. Second of all, there were plenty of European "me too" brands in that era, like Alcatel, Philips or Siemens.
That said, everybody followed trends then, just like they are today.

Regarding the article, the insulting notion that this was the first good Ericsson phone is probably the reason Americans failed at mobile production much faster than Sweden. This was the LAST good Ericsson phone. Fixed it for ya.

I had the T68 back then and I remember well when I bought it I couldn't believe that I'm holding a mobile with colored screen. I spent the whole night playing with the phone menu and the color screen. It was revolutionary at that time.

It had its time, but the modern phone has become multi-functional. It has become the single most powerful tool in our hands.

I don't like joysticks, so I prefer Siemens S55. Actually only 2 Siemens in my collection, S45 and S55

Actually I'd argue "the pinnacle of mobile communication at the time" we're the Japanese keitais.

AK, 07 Jun 2020Best phone for it's time I ever had next to the p900Mine was P910

Had another Ericsson phone to this time. It was great. To this time it was like the Saab among phones.

Generally, camera modules like DXOne or Sonys QX-lenses should have a comeback. It was a great concept to upgrade smartphones into much better cameras. But maybe fewer people would buy new expensive phones year after year, so I guess thats the reason why manufactures are not interested in it anymore. It is all about money, money, money. But this gap in the market could also be an option for Nikon, Canon, Panasonic... Their P&S compacts are already dying.

Youp, there was a time when mobile phones were not a copy paste chinese "something" and people somehow respected that, you would have not seen somebody even remotly thinking of buying a knockoff like in this day and age where knockoff's became a thing and got so high they actually sell with 1000$, what a pitty people have no respect for nothing anymore, no principles just selfishness.

Best phone for it's time I ever had next to the p900

The modular design definitely needs to make a big comeback. Up to this point, I'm not that equally enthusiastic with other phones apart from Motorola Moto Mods. It might not be popular, but it still definitely turn peoples' head.

Not familiar with this one, but i had the T230 back in 2003. It was very similar in some ways, and it supported the attachable camera add-on as well. It also had a pretty cool game about traversing through a volcano. I'm getting nostalgic right now...

GIF, 07 Jun 2020My first color screen phone Sony T68i. Good memories and fo... moreThats true, in that time one of best and most inovative phone T68 was, also that sepereate camera was really good stuff. I've had like 20 Sony Ericsson phones since 2001 all way untill 2007, and one of them was T68, later 86i, T65, T230 (also if i remember with similar camera add on, maybe the same model), R600, later, K510, K700, and phones (for that time with great camera), K750, esp K800 wirh xenon flash.. Also from Walkman series i had W810 (the one from one of Jameb Bond movie).. Yes in that time, Nokia, even Siemens, was popular as Sony-Ericsson, but most of the phones was those from Japan-Sweden.. Of, first phone i use from Ericsson was , Ericsson T10, with blue or purple color, and i think that model is from 1999.. Good times, and it's ture, now days most of the phones are same, same functions, similar design, esp on the front and when screen is turned off, only branding is differente.
