Anonymous, 07 Jun 2020Do you have a blog? This is the main issue nowadays, design can be important too, but not if it prevent useful things to be implemented on all the available Smartphones of the market...

I didn't knew the Xcover Pro, after watching a disassembly video, I didn't see any ambiant light sensor indeed...
And this phone with his large border around the display would have easily put the camera in those and both ambiant light and proximity sensor in them.

Nope I don't have a blog, I was thinking about making one where I would write the various explanations about "How bezel aren't as bad as peoples say", "pop up camera being way better and stronger than people think", "how underdisplay camera are a bad idea", and other subjects like, camera, notch, security, biometrics, etc etc...
So I would just link those rather than always have to write down the same things again and again to educate peoples on those subjects, but I don't know how GSMArena moderators would react to me often posting links...

Maria, 06 Jun 2020Thanks for your explanation. I like it although I still hop... moreYour welcome, the issue is that people are at war against any form of top bezels, but they don't even know why, they are willing to accept a hole to replace a top bezel on phone that have a chin (lower bezel) as thick as what a slim top bezel would have been, it make no senses...
Meanwhile great phone with thin bezel exist, the Nubia Play is a good example :
                          https://www.gsmarena.com/zte_nubia_play-pictures-10193.php

As you may see on its picture, there are little sensors on the right half of the bezel, those are the essential ambiant light and proximity sensors, having they big enough and directly looking is what we need, notches caused them to either become tiny therefor becoming less effective, or being placed under display, there too loosing performances.

The irony is that Apple introduced the notch in order to host many sensors, being 3D Facial Recognition sensors (an infrared camera and a dot projector, projecting 30,000 dots in your face to make a 3D map of it), but Android phones copied the design while removing the functional aspect, and since it was less than useful, they reduced it until teardrop notches and their final form, the punch hole appeared, cancelling any chances to get 3D facial recognition or on most phone because of a lack of space, same with Samsung with their Iris scanner that got dropped for the same reasons, just to put a punch hole.

If you look at the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9, you can see their top bezel are loaded with sensors :
                          https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s9-pictures-8966.php

Imagine that we got from this :
                          https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/nexus2cee_Sensors.png
                          To this :
                          https://www.sammobile.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/galaxy-s10-proximity-sensor.png

This is what I call a serious downgrade, and underdisplay camera could do the same with all Android phones that still have something else than notches or punch holes, moving everything under the display would prevent many sensors to do their job properly, so facial/iris recognition would be less secure...

Also this tech have been in R&D for years and millions have been spent, yet no satisfying results are still available and may never be...
The cost of phones with underdisplay camera would be really high to both cover the expenses of the R&D and to make this costly tech generating profits...

So for less expensive phones a slim bezel will always be the best option, as notches and punch holes cause more problems than they solves...
And for the rest, the best option should be pop up camera, because, hear that :
You don't need the camera to be hidden from you, you need to hide yourself from your camera !
Privacy is a really big concern nowadays, underdisplay camera make things worse as you come to forget there is a camera looking at you, pop up camera do prevent the camera to look at you.

And the future should be pop up camera like the one in the Vivo V17 Pro :
                          https://www.gsmarena.com/vivo_v17_pro-pictures-9849.php
But rather than having only 2 camera, have all the 3D facial recognition sensors.

Now THIS would be a real evolution !

Thin bezel or pop up camera (for those who want fulldisplay) are the superior and best options, the only other interesting alternative would be simply no front camera at all.

There is nothing more stupid than making an expensive camera made to output high quality picture to look through an opaque surface and try to compensate its disastrous result with software...
