O-Film unveils periscope module with continuous zoom (85 mm to 170 mm)

16 June 2020
Unlike current smartphone cameras (which have a locked focal length), this one can adjust its zoom level smoothly with no digital interpolation needed.

Nicolas F, 16 Jun 2020I wonder, is it possible to create such camera system where... moreI don't think this would be possible as the front element(the protective glass) on the front is calculated in the lens itself. Using the same front glass for different focal length would potentially have a huge impact on the outcome of the quality of the photo once zoomed in. You would also have to have some switching internal mechanism, which would swap between the different focal length glasses and that would prove difficult.

In year 2020, would a manufacturer want to claim 1.3MP with 3x zoom? I guess not. The 1.3MP is a put-off at least in the last 10 years.

The competition is somehow switched to who makes the best cameras now and the nr1 reason of buying a phone now seems to be the camera.

I did not know why we need so sophisticated camera in a smart phone. Almost every phone manufacturer is working on Camera instead of improving phone and keep increasing phone price like anything. Are we trying to convert phone into ultra compact camera?
why cannot just buy the normal camera or DSLR. It is okay to just shoot for occasional using phone, but for the good one use a camera which can last for many years with better lens and quality and smart phone just for couple of years.

I'm looking forward to see this implemented on future smartphones, but given the height of the module I guess the sensor size needs to be really small (around 1/3" at most, maybe?). 3.5-9.5x zoom range option sounds really attractive to me, however.

PartTimePhoner, 16 Jun 2020Even if it was possible, it wouldnt appeal to an average co... moreHonestly.. it would be nice to have only 1 camera that includes all the focal length.. but it must be a high quality sensor like IMX689 (BBK sensor) or HMX (xiaomi) sensor

it's good, but that means there's something physically moving inside the phone, make it even worse when we drop the phone (which we're usually do)

So actually every smartphone 12 megapixel camera has a 5.0x optical zoom setting, but just with 0.5 megapixels and with a 96% smaller sensor, if one uses the smartphone marketing definition for optical zoom settings.
                              5x digital zoom = 5x optical zoom with 12/25=0.48 megapixels and (1-1/25) = 96% smaller sensor

Many people don't realize that smartphone manufacturers use the term optical zoom in a way that you could also say that digital zoom is optical zoom. A 3.0x optical zoom setting means that the megapixel count is not reduced and that the focal length is 3x as large. So for example the typical "8 megapixel 3x camera" with a focal length of 7.5mm (main camera with a focal length between 7 and 4mm) isn't a true 3.0x optical zoom setting. When you apply the same logic to a 2.0x digital zoom camera with a 12 megapixel sensor, then 2.0x digital zoom is a 2.0x optical zoom setting with 3 megapixels. 3.0x digital zoom is 3.0x optical zoom with 1.3 megapixels. So actually every smartphone 12 megapixel camera has a 5.0x optical zoom setting, but just with 0.5 megapixels.

TheLastOracle, 16 Jun 202085mm and 170mm (in 35mm equivalent) with the lens aperture ... moreInstead make the ois în lenses you puț it on sensor. Olympus, Panasonic, Sony use this type of stabilisation. And is the most effective

PartTimePhoner, 16 Jun 2020Ah I see, I got it wrong. I feel like what you actually sai... moreYeah, space will be a problem, because who knows how all that stuff would need to be positioned. Also, it would need a mechanism to activate separate lenses (because today switching cameras on smartphone means switching between sensors actually, not lenses), which could lead to having moving parts.

85mm and 170mm (in 35mm equivalent) with the lens aperture changing from f/3.1 to f/5.1. That's a lot of light loss.

The main reasons for Not having an Actual Moving Zoom Lens on Smartphones is the light loss (this is from f3.1 to f5.1), limitations on sensor size, and OIS. Plus there is no constant f-stop, meaning that as you zoom in closer, the lens suddenly starts losing light, and the shake also becomes more apparent (OIS becomes less effective as one zooms in).

Nicolas F, 16 Jun 2020What do you mean? Maybe my phrasing was wrong; I meant suc... moreAh I see, I got it wrong. I feel like what you actually said would probably take too much space though
