Apple's Macs are moving to ARM-based custom processors

22 June 2020
This move was rumored a lot, and a long time coming.

Adul Al Salami Kebab, 01 Aug 2020So umm how will CS:GO run on a ARM based MAC?Maybe with this translation software called Rosetta 2.
CS:GO is originally made in x86-64, and Rosetta 2 will translate it into ARM64 so then it can be run.

Anonymous, 26 Jun 2020Books existed before the invention of the Gutenberg press. ... moreso basically what you're saying is without TSMC (gutenberg press), Apple wouldn't be able to manufacture more than a handful of macs since they have to do it themselves! albeit at a much smaller scale. perhaps in Woz's room again. effectively i don't see what you're trying to prove here.

without apple, the original would not exist. true.
without tsmc, the authorised recreations (i'd rather not use 'duplicate' in this case) would not exist either. that's also true.

apple would certainly exist without tsmc but they wouldn't be able to manufacture as many products without tsmc, unless they were able to create their own factory - while they did not have the funds to do such a thing back then, they do have the funds for this today but still choose not to go ahead with their own factory, as it would mean they have to employ US citizens for that which would increase costs/lower their exorbitant margins.

tsmc would also exist without apple and would be manufacturing stuff for other companies. perhaps they won't be as big as they are today.

after all, tsmc is just a "printing press". nothing special about a large facility where the technological capability to mass manufacture sensitive components exists. you can just hand-paint the components on paper and we're done! or use the more recent techniques where you can etch pcb's using laser printers. who needs a big facility?

apple cunningly left out that part - not a major deal but basically, there's no such thing as magic. someone has to do the work somewhere.

this is similar in concept to what windows did with metro but ultimately will be more successful due to the larger number of ios app store apps vs. windows store apps

              1) "Because Macs are switching to ARM, developers will be able to make their iPhone and iPad apps available for Macs without any modifications, and users will get them through the Mac App Store." - no it does not work that way. if it did, these 'macs' would only be running ios with an osx skin OR all the iphones & ipads are actually running osx with an ios skin which nobody knew about.

              2) only reason they can afford to do this is cos their mac market share is very low. didn't work out for windows cos their market share is too high.

Game over for Intel :) AMD pushing over now Apple leaving them to rot, its time for Intel to wake up I guess, because they are in complete shit

The move has nothing to do with Intel. This move is purely to make more money for Apple. ARM based Macs will be able to use most iOS apps without needing to be converted. There are hundreds of thousands of iOS apps available right now. ARM-based Macs will have more software available than current Macs. Apple will make more money if they can streamline all their apps together that syncs iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Don't over-analyze it. It's Apple, it's always about money.

I.S, 23 Jun 2020Apple moves to build their own CPU to cut production price.... moreAlternatively, Apple grew fed up with intel's pricing, foot dragging on performance and multi-core for the last decade, and more recently, their inability to move beyond 14nm. While AMD is riding high now, they just don't have the long term track record to bank on. At the time this strategy was devised (clearly this has been a very long game) AMD was on life support with 2nd rate processors. For better or worse, with in-house designs Apple controls their own destiny.

TSMC *produces* the SoCs. It's not "assembly" (as in your "build"), but more akin to a press that prints journals or books (only here they engrave silicon wafers). Are you that guy that points-out it's not the author that makes a book, but rather the printing mill? Because that's pretty shortsighted if you ask me.

Furthermore, a SoC is made of multiple blocks inside a chip, each of those "components" with its own design (by a different team/often times even company). That means that someone needs to make those blocks fit together, much like in an assembly for IP property. That someone is Apple, not TSMC. So yeah, they also *build* the SoC.
